I've heard differing statements on this, but is the clutch and clutch ring design on the first year P51s exactly the same as all other P51 Vacumatics? I'm just wondering if a first year cap is interchangeable with later P51 Vacumatics. Thanks!

Yes, the clutch on the First Year pens are longer and have fewer holes.

 

But the caps are interchangeable between pens.

Did the clutch rings on pens with GF caps have a gold wash, as they did in later years?

There are 4 hole and 5 hole long clutch inserts with some variation among the two types.

 

The rings are essentially the same for all full sized pens.

 

Yes first year pens can have a gold washed clutch ring.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
