Hello From The Hague

Good morning all, my name is Chantal, a lefty from the Netherlands.

I’m a long time writer of short stories and novels and after a good clean up I renewed my love for the fountain pen after finding my old Lamy ABC from primary school. As a child I hated my fountain pen. Being forced to learn how to write with it, as a lefty I couldn’t get it right. Now, I’ve learned to write underhand and I’m loving it. I’ve even decided to write all my stories on actual paper, and of course with a different fountain pen and ink for each story.

My current collection in progress started with the Lamy ABC, followed by the Lamy safari in all black, umbra, petrol and dark lilac. Two Lamy nexx, the nexx M anthracite and the nexx violet. I also have a Pelikan twist in rose and bronze, and my latest additions were a Diplomat magnum indigo blue and prismatic purple. For inks I have been stuck on Diamine, but now joined the inxperiment from Appelboom to discover more.

I am actively trying to get my husband and friends join me down the rabbit hole and it seems to be working. Also looking forward to the first pen show/meet in June here in the Netherlands. I’m happily being sucked ever deeper down the hobby that is fountain pens!

Hi Jürgen,

The pen meet is on the 16th of June in the van der Valk hotel in Utrecht. From 12.00 to 17.00. Free of charge. Address is Winthontlaan 4-6, 3526 KV.

I have no clue which shops or such will be present, only that Appelboom announced it so I'm guessing they will be at least 😊

Welcome and perhaps we will meet in Utrecht in June or At the Tilburg pen show in September. And good luck with your fountain pen addiction

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

  • 2 weeks later...

You have successfully entered a rabbit hole, who knows what it'll yield and where it'll lead.

Enjoy the fascinating journey and feel free to ask/share... thumbup.gif

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
