Hello everyone, Im John from the UK and Im brand new to this forum.

I am currently looking at getting the CS winston but cant decide in black/silver or gold silver, unfortunately I am also in a dilemma of the Pelikan M1000?

I already have the MB 149 in fine nib and the 145 in fine nib, and I have just given away to a friend my diplomat excellence which is a wonderful pen and I already miss it.

I would be grateful for any opinions on which purchase I should get, the CS or the Pelikan? I would like something fundamentally British to hang onto for ever but I have read that the filling system on the Pelikan is superior whereas the winston can be problematic, perhaps this is incorrect information?

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Regards to you all.

Hi Pakman and Northstar

Thanks for the welcome I’m excited to be here on this wonderful forum, I have been dodging on and off it for a little while but decided to take the plunge and join up.

Thanks for the advice on the pen, it’s a quandary for sure as I like both of the pens but I want value for money with little or no worry about poor quality performance or workmanship issues given the high price tag of the CS. My main concern in the CS is that these modern CS are put together components of a previous company or indeed 2 previous company’s and the good name of CS is just being traded with a higher price than is necessary in order to justify the price tag?

Whereas the Pelikan is ..well Pelikan is Pelikan it speaks for itself doesn’t it?

Argh...a dilemma lol.

Hi and :W2FPN:. I have a CS Churchill and two pel M1000, from my personal opinion and standpoint , the Pel M1000 is better built and on the other hand the Conway Stewart is more exclusive. The Pel M1000 has an integrated piston filler whereas the Churchill (the one I have) is a button filler. I prefer the Pelikan.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Hello everyone and thanks for the warm welcome.

I have to say I am no further forward in my quest, I do like Piston fillers I have to admit, but I’m driving myself a bit daft in my hunt.

So far-

Conway Stewart 100 classic

CS Winston

Pelikan M1000

MB 146/149

I have absolutely no knowledge of CS pens and is this resurrected name a worthy purchase?

Argh...help here we go again .

I will go with MB 146, such an iconic pen. I believe that 149 is the "flagship" model of MB Meisterstuck.

But for my personal taste, 149 is too big and not convenient for daily writing. Have you compared the 146 & 149 in MB Boutique?

Hi John,

Might I suggest you post the question on the forum? Seems like introductions tend to attract alot of hellos and nothing much more.

Sorry I can’t quite contribute to this as I have no experience with CS

Welcome!

It all comes down to personal taste, needs, etc., as usual.

If you want something quintessentially British, aside from writing properties, well CS is the way to go. But better a pre-shutdown, for real Conway Stewart than the new label. Nothing against them; I have dealt with them, and they are pretty nice guys. I suppose they are still purely British, but I don't have any of their nibs, so I can't attest to writing properties.

All of the CS pens I have are lovely writers, and not one has given me a problem worse than the cap finial coming unglued on one -- an easy fix even for a ham handed amateur such as I.

I also have a few Pelikans, including one M1k; and I have a couple of additional M1k nibs to rotate, one of which I keep in a Newton custom made urushi eye dropper. In the brand, I have more M8xx examples than anything, and those are pens that I use more than just about any others. But you should go on the Pelikan forum and look at the many comments about nib width variation, mostly noting that you will get a wider line than you might expect. Unless you're looking for really broad lines, you might want to try F or FF first time around. Mostly, my M nibs stroke as wide as other brands' B or BB nibs.

If ink capacity is an issue, few pens compare with Pelikan M1k. Personally, I don't want that much ink in every fill. Sometimes, I would like to change inks a bit more often that this allows [without waste]. Again, your needs and wants.

Good luck in your quest!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
