I just inventoried my horde and Ive hit 200 bottles of fountain pen ink. (Its taken 40 years on and off.) Im debating doing some serious down sizing and curious how many inks the rest of you keep on hand.

Im compiling an inventory and Ill post it if anyone is interested in seeing it.

I am ashamed to say. Having just bought about a dozen new bottles.

....my pen/ink/paper embargo is working perfectly....

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

36 bottles at the count of today. Enough 'till I retire, but there is always another ink to be had, isn't there?

I use a modified version of David Parker's (i.e., Figboot on Pens) spreadsheet to track my pens and inks.

Including mini bottles (e.g., Iroshizuku, Diamine) I have ~65 which is probably enough to last me another 50 years. I've reached the limits of my pen storage (I really should sell some pens) so I buy very few pens anymore (unless I find an irresistible deal) but I will try to pick up a bottle of ink if I come across a pen store while traveling.

Sounds like I need to do some culling. I once read Greg Clark had 650 bottles, so my stockpile didnt look too excessive. Honestly, I have way too many inks I doubt Ill ever use again. Any advice on selling off part of a collection? Any body here done that?

Oh, my! I only have six! My recommendation would be to narrow your collection down by colours, and only keep a good number for you of each colour. Also focus on what you use the most, and keep that. There's nothing wrong with having a lot of ink, if you're using it, but I can definitely understand wanting to thin your collection down.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I finally counted how much ink I have...50 bottles collected over 9 years! (I'm almost on track to matching you.) And there are 3 more in my "to-buy" list!

Edit: faulty math, I'm actually exceeding your rate >_<

I used to think I’d never have to buy ink again, but with all the wild fires last year I’m starting to think I need to focus more on having fun adventures and minimizing stockpiles of stuff. Of course, the last few times I decided to downsize I starting thinking about how long it takes to list, sell, and ship stuff. I’m torn as to whether it’s worth it. I’d love to hear what other collectors have done.

Over the years, I've given inks away. It all started here on FPN, when I didn't even know what Noodler's was and someone promptly sent me a bottle. Just like that!

If it's a desirable, limited edition, unobtainium ink, you could easily sell it here.

(I'm looking to donate some beginner pens and inks to someone who will give them to kids).

I'm not as bad as the OP... I think.... OTOH, I'm afraid to count.

But I do have a LOT of ink. Even with having given some bottles and samples away. Enough to the point that my husband tells people I used to collect pens -- but that now I collect ink....

Just sitting here in the living room I'm counting over a dozen. That's not counting the sample vials, which really need to be reorganized; or the ones in the basket I take to pen club meetings. I also have four or five storage boxes upstairs (say, sweater box size) on the shelves flanking my little desk.

Mind you, a number of the bottles are duplicates -- back up bottles of inks I really like, or extras of vintage inks if they're cheap enough. It also includes bottles I decanted ink into from larger bottles (an 8 oz. bottle of vintage Quink Permanent Violet and a 3/4 full pint bottle of vintage Skrip Peacock).

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Let's see.

Black: MontBlanc Simplo Black with SC21, Quink Permanent Black with Solv-X, Noodler's Borealis Black.

Purple: Noodler's Purple.

Blue: Noodler's Blue. Waterman "I Can't Believe It's Florida Blue!"

Green: Diamine Sherwood.

Brown: Noodler's Brown.

Red: Noodler's Red-Black (dilute about 5:1 or so).

Turquoise: Iro Ku-Jaku, Sheaffer Turquoise.

My wife's inks: Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin, Noodler's VMail Midway Blue, Noodler's Widow Maker, Noodler's Rattler Red Eel.

And, I think that's it, 16. I don't feel like digging through my ink box while I'm practicing my Lenten penance of using only black ink.

I don't think I'd bother sell any of my ink or pens that I'm considering culling. I'd give them away on the PIF forum.

I have around 75 bottles. But, most of them are only 1/2 full. My daughter and I split bottles of ink. Last Christmas I sent her home with about 20 2 oz. Nalgene bottles of various inks that I/we had acquired through the year.

You win :yikes:

If it weren't for ink samples I'd probably be closer to 300. Thank god for those! Plus, I just discovered 28 bottles of dip pen only calligraphy pigmented acrylic ink and a box of gouache tubes I forgot I had. Yikes.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
    • A Smug Dill
Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
