Safari 2019 Pastel Edition

I've seen them for the first time in a brick and mortar shop. Before seeing them, I was sure I'd buy the powder pink one.

After seeing them, I did not buy the pink and nor the others. They are so pale! Even paler, when exposed near the normal colors. I like the color of the ring, which is a bit darker. But the body... no. Love didn't happen. Too bad.

But I've bought another Vista and a bottle of the Lamy bronze ink. To cheer up again :-)

I too found the colours quite dull.

OTOH, the bronze ink should look lovely in the clear barrel paired with a B/1.1i/1.5i nib.

When the first images of the Pastels came out I was underwhelmed. Thanks for helping me save my money.

yuck. Sorry, but pastels are something from the 1950's that I don't want back. Not everything in the 50's was great *cough*JIMCROWE*cough*

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

Pastels have been having a resurgence for the last few years. I dont think its a callback to the 50s, Ive seen a fair few art school final shows over the years and thats where Ive seen these colours bubbling up most often.

(Also Lamy is German and had a pretty different 1950s to the USA, I definitely dont see much hankering for the 50s in Germany!)

Eventually, I suppose you do start running out of ideas for the same model. unsure.png

This!

Id like to see marbled Safaris... once theyve done every solid colour, theres a world of combinations still to go!

I'm waiting for the day in which they'll bring out a burgundy matte safari with black trim and black nib (like the dark lilac, but burgundy). Ooooh, I'll be happy that day 🙂

You might get your wish, it isn't an odd colour/combo. smile.png As a guesstimate, 3-5 years.

Yes, I agree Lamy has still more design potential with the matte Safari in a dark color tone (rust, burgundy, midnight blue, forest green, etc) and black trim/nib.

I think they'll go for translucent demonstrators, as a line of companions to the Vista. And if the snappy idea of three pens at a time works out for them, I expect they will continue it.

Personally I hope they don't - all those Pelikan demonstrators are a bit dull, and with those you actually have ink sloshing about in them.

Maybe they could do a "Vista LX": it would be slightly tinted and (to score its "lx" designation) it could be a piston filler.

But really I just wish they'd do more matte pens, and more Safaris with a red clip.

I highly doubt Safari/Vista will see a piston, there would be a significant price rise.

The matt colours and red clip are more likely.

I doubt it too (but one can dream)... Maybe they could just eliminate all of the holes in the Vista's body to allow for easier eye-dropper conversion.

Yes, I agree Lamy has still more design potential with the matte Safari in a dark color tone (rust, burgundy, midnight blue, forest green, etc) and black trim/nib.

Adding brown, mustard, grey, persimmon from jchch1950 post and Lamy still has a wide palette of classy colors to offer in the matte with black trim Safari family.

There has been the brown bear Safari made with Line but a matte dark chocolate is possible.

There was also a really light grey matte Safari with black trim. I know that Lamy doesn't like to bring back colors and, there is the grey and silver Al-Star but, a slightly darker grey matte Safari would be great.

As a purple fan, there is a wide variety of purple between the Dark Lilac and Barney the Dinosaure purple. One only has to look at the colors available in large color pencils sets.

I also understand that the Safari is a great fountain pen to attract young writers, hence the pastels and the Line Safaris.

Dennis - I think I'm right in saying that if you buy the matching rollerball (which has no holes) you can create an eyedropper very easily. There's even a thread!

John

Brilliant thread... thanks for that John.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
