Luck In Department Store

I feel really lucky. This Saturday morning I was browsing my local department store and I saw a Vanishing Point at a local department store marked down to 110€ (reason: Box is missing, duh, I write with my pens, I don't keep them in boxes) and I am ABSOLUTELY flabbergasted and amazed at how good the nib is, how convenient the capless design is, how nicely balanced and centered the pen feels in my hand.

The lady in the store wasn't even aware it's a fountain pen she was firmly convinced it was fancy ballpoint or roller, so after showing great interest in me explaining the Capless / Vanishing point principle to her, her eyes showing incredible amazement in the process, she fumbles in a drawer, pulls out a bottle of Irushizuku Asa-Gao (less its box) asks if I want the "original" ink to go with it (not I am not already drowning in ink, including several nice shades of blue) and charges me (no box, no label, not in inventory) the same 7,95€ they charge for a bottle of the (otherwise very noble and not at all to be disrespectable) Parker Quink

So, besides having struck quite the deal, I probably have a new favourite daily writer (I work in IT, but prefer to take meetings notes, quick ideas I need to capture and notes in Interviews in a notebook, I find typing on my laptop distracting in such settings)

More to say, I can't remember having spent more than 90$/€ on any of the fountain pens I own. Most of my lineup is some Safari/Al-Star, a couple of TWSBI (Eco and one Classic, with the latter being slightly favoured due to its higher weight, and the fact it can be charged from the 30ml Diamine bottles) and then a couple of nice Pelikans bought second hand for much less than retail (the last one was an M205 Aquamarine for 30€) I am really amazed at how double the prize (the cheapest Capless new here in Spain go for around 180€ new retail price) will improve the perceived quality of a pen so much.

Sorry for the wrong forum, could one of the admins kindly move this thread?

Photos coming tomorrow, please excuse the shameful omission.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
