I Won My First Danitrio!

I am ecstatic and just had to share with someone!! I have admired Danitrio's for many years but could never justify the price to myself (not that I don't think their cost is worth it, just was always out of my league). Until I found this beauty! And won her at a great price to boot! I have big hands so figured I would do better with a Mikado or really any of their other models, but I just couldn't help myself when I saw this Hakkaku (I believe it's a Sho-Hakkaku). It sounds like it's going to be pretty short and fat but I'm hoping it'll make for a great daily writer. Woohoo!!

Congrats on that beautiful looking pen!

I hope you will share some writing samples when it arrives :)

What kind of nib is on there?

Yes, it is sho-hakkaku, but it is still the size of a modern large pen. The frog is lovely. Enjoy the new pen.

Love the frog - you can put a matching green ink in!

Thanks :) The nib is an EF. Something about this pen really called to me.. the brush-stroke-like urushi work, the contrast of colors, the playful but very well-done frog, the octagon body.. just a very unique pen.

As others have said, it is indeed a Sho-Hakkaku. While smaller than the Genkai, Bamboo and Mikado, the Hakkaku is still a big pen.

I'd been watching this one on ebay, but ended up getting a different Danitrio instead.

It's a beautiful pen. Enjoy!

Very nice. The frog is great that that size Danitrio is easy to live with. Warning, it may not be your last Dani!

Thanks everyone. The pen arrived today and I am blown away. It is indeed a very nice size, even for my big hands, and the urushi and maki-e work is stunning beyond words. It is a true work of art and quite frankly blows the Nakayas I have owned out of the water. An additional happy surprise is the 18K EF nib is -very- soft and flexible with vintage-like snap-back. This was unexpected as from my understanding the typical #6 Bock 18K nibs aren't like this, and as this is a used pen, I'm wondering if someone had some work done on it to make it this flexible. I know not to push 18K nibs too far for risk of springing the tines, but even with very light pressure the tines flex and produce some amazing line variation without pushing it very far at all. It is more flexible than my ASC 'magic flex', flexes easier than an FA nib, and is on par with my FPnibs semi-flex nib. Overall I am very happy with the pen, it may be my new favorite!

I feel the same way about my *new* Sailor 1911 Maki-e pen, except that it does not have a flexible nib. I have other pens that give me that pleasure. Enjoy your new pen!

The "fireball" nibs came is two varieties, regular and stiff. You likely have a regular nib which is very soft. Sometimes there was an R in front of the nib size makes in the lower right corner so REF for example. The nibs were too soft for some so they also offered a stiff version which was denoted by and S so SEF. At some point I think they stopped marking the R and S and may have even reformulated the nibs to be somewhere in between the old extremes.

Thanks for the info, Zaddick. Yes, this is a nib that will only -not- flex with a feather touch, so must be a 'regular'.

Did you win this on ebay?

Quick question for everyone: the Danitrio box the pen came with included an eydropper, but this pen is a converter pen like the other smaller Danitrio pens. Does this mean that this pen can be converted to eyedropper? Or was I perhaps sent a box that didn't specifically go with my pen?

Yes I did.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
