Hi,

I'd like to invite everyone owning a vintage original Mabie Todd pen pouch to present it here.

Photos are very much welcome, if possible tell us what pen came with it or when it was made.

Best regards

Jens

It will be interesting to see the responses.

You may be aware that pen pouches or leder etui were much more popular in Germany than in the rest of the world, I am talking about the typically 2 pen zippered leather case.

The prices of these cases has increased dramatically over the past 5 years, almost 400%, I havent seen a Mabie Todd case of this design but MB, Pelikan and Staedtler are available.

Hi,

that's an interesting point.

Indeed I saw lots of swan "metal pockets", some gift boxes (...) but so few pouches.

So I'm lucky about the green one I could get...

And putting a Swan into an Osmia case would be bad style imo.

Your case looks excellent, and in very good condition.

Putting a vintage pen in a modern case also looks wrong.

Leather cases to carry pens didnt seem to catch on in the rest of the world, Parkers for example used to be sold in hard cases or plain boxes which were left at home, the pen being clipped on the inside jacket pocket and taken to the office.

The clip was a big selling point. The invention of the fountain pen meant that you no longer had to carry a bottle of ink to dip - now you could simply clip your pen into your pocket and go! So convenient!

It's still the main way I carry my pens, every day.

Even Bic put a clip on the Cristal cap, to make life easier!

I agree with your point re vintage pens and modern cases.

Nice case, SchaumburgSwan. First one I've ever seen. Have had a few of the Swan metal pockets before (never used them - quite brutal) but haven't seen a Swan pouch, until now.

Looking forward to seeing more.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
