Is This Good Printer Paper For Fountain Pens?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to learn Spencerian Script and I'm going to need many hundreds of practice pages and I was told to get 24lb to 32lb paper. I just want to clarify...

Is this right here the kind of paper I should be purchasing?

EDIT: I'm also wondering what difference I would get out of going from 24lb to 32lb paper? I was looking at other posts and people were saying the 32lb paper was "too thick" but I'm not really sure why that even matters; especially if it is better for fountain pens.

Also, for some reason the 32lb paper I'm looking at is even the same price as the 24lb paper...

I use the 32lbs HP LJ paper, works great with fountain pens, similar smoothness and properties to Clairefontaine and Rhodia.

The second Ebay link I posted, would that be a good paper in your opinion?

Kind've wondering what the difference is between the "premium" (the one I linked) and the LJ (Laser Jet?) that you're referring to; which is almost double the price.

Caveat: just my mental viewpoint -- no experience with the actual papers...

For a practice paper, if you only use one side, the 24lb is probably sufficient. For double sided use, the 32lb should be more resistant to bleed-through.

My computer stock is 24lb 96brightness OfficeDepot INKJET paper -- which is NOT really suited to fountain pen inks. It's not the worst (I have some matte finish photo papers which are really absorbent/feathering).

The color circle on the Premium32 makes me think this is an inkjet paper ("faster drying" -- laser printers don't have a drying time as they melt waxy pigment onto the paper). OTOH: HP's site lists Premium24 as a LaserJet paper. (Interesting: I found more HP Paper data on International Papers website)

Hmmm... Could PremiumXX be a replacement for the LaserJet paper line?

If you haven’t, check the back threads on this topic. HP 32lb is considered top but there are others from Staples and Office Depot that are quite good and maybe less $

I have the "laserjet" but people seem happy with the "premium" with fountain pens, as per amazon reviews...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
