My name is Joel Turrell 76 years young, and only recently discovered the hobby of fountain pen use, but I've been writing with a Meisterstuck 149 class since 1972, when I bought my first one, then named a Diplomat. I loved it because of its cavernous capacity: I could write 6 hours a day as my work demanded, and not run out of ink. That pen was outrageously expensive, at $75; a new suit cost me only $150 at Brooks Bros., but the pen was well worth it.

 

My current holdings focus on piston fillers (from Pelikan, Montblanc, Leonardo, and one OMAS), and several Italian and American converter pens. I have joined because of the special knowledge which members are so generous as to share with others. Perhaps there will come a time when I too have something meaningful to offer the Community.

Howdy from halfway across the commonwealth in Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

My favorite pens are Parkers, but when push comes to shove I'd have to say my favorite fill system would have to be piston fillers. And my most expensive pens are Pelikans. Which model(s) of those do you have, joelturl? I'm guessing that if your first pen was a MB 149, they will be larger than what I like (M400s are a perfect size for my hand).

What ink(s) are you using with that nice collection you have going?

I generally suggest that new people click on the "View New Content" button when they log in, to get a good overview of a range of topics (the amount you get can be adjusted in the sidebar on the main page) And to have a look at the Pinned index to the Ink Reviews Forum. But I also warn them that we are all shameless enablers here, and will be more than happy to help you spend your discretionary funds on pens, ink, paper, repair tools, pen shows, sealing wax, and ephemera.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
