Aurora Chinese Calligraphy Cm Nib - Ng-Togi-Like

I've only seen these for sale on Nibsmith, but I assume other places might be able to get them on special order.

So far they seem available in 18kt gold/rhodium/two-tone and 14kt gold.

I had asked Mr. Smith if they were available in 14kt rhodium, intending to buy an Optima Burgundy, but then I saw KWZ IG Gummiberry, and looked at the Optima Nebulosa - and the rest, as they say, is history.

(the ink isn't here yet sadly, so CV Dark Energy was used because it was at hand)

The pen doesn't matter, the nib does, though I will point out I did ask for it to be tuned, so I can't make comments on factory wetness/feedback.

Through the medium of my horrid handwriting I will attempt to give you an idea of how it behaves.

You can see that, much like the Sailor nibs of the same kind, it writes at least size larger than indicated with a normal hand position.

I've never used an actual naginata togi or an actual Chinese Calligraphy nib. I do know the real NG-T is flexible to a degree.

This, like most non-flex Aurora nibs, is at best a semi-nail.

Anyway, I've had the pen for like, 3 hours and I'm looking into getting all my round nibs reground to something like this, so uh ... I really like it?

Thanks for this info. I was waiting for a review. As the horizontal lines thicken with a lowering of the angle to the paper, it is similar to a Naginata Togi. Many folks offer this grind now which is great.

Thank you very much for the commentary and sharing the writing samples.

In terms of this style of nib's 'behaviour' with regards to what it puts on the page, it sounds very much like my personal nightmare. :o

Eh. Its an architect that's not angle-dependent.

That sort of thing is fun, so I'm just using it as an edc pen, and do everything with it.

I jokingly refer to this nib as the Naghinatta Togghi .

In my opinion it's very nice that Aurora is offering this kind of nib, especially considering their advance into the Asian market.

In fact the goal of the Naginata-Togi grind as developed by Nagahara is to simulate brush-strokes for the writing of chinese and japanese characters. It has little to do with an architect grind, except the fact that both are narrower vertically than horizontally. Although developed with that intent, many westerners became fond of that grind due to its expressiveness.

I'm maintaining a comprehensive list of Iron-Gall inks. Contributions most welcome! bit.ly/irongall

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
