Greetings,

 

I am Dinesh and i am from Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. I am intrigued by fountain pens when introduced to me during my schooldays. Since then using them all my life.

 

I have used a Camlin 36 fountain pen with Royal blue brill ink which is an eyedropper pen. It is used from my 8th grade till last year when i decided to retire the pen and hold it as a treasure since

 

it has given me many memories. Then i bought a Lamy safari Charcoal extra fine with converter last year and using it as a daily driver. It is a very good writer.

 

Last month, i casually researched about fountain pens online and found out about various brands to name a few like Cross, Sailor, Montblanc, Pelikan, Kaweco, Jinhao, Sheaffer, etc.

 

I zoomed in on piston fillers and narrowed my choice to Pelikan M1000.

 

I have read our forum posts about how to procure it from either cult pens or from a brick and mortar stores and i am unsure. I know it is a huge leap to go from Lamy Safari to Pelikan M1000.

 

Last week, I went to a Pelikan retailer (WilliamPenn) in VR Mall, Chennai to ask for quote of M1000 and got a quote of Rs. 46000/- and was told that the pen will arrive 20 days after ordering.

 

I went to that physical store to have a glimpse of the pen and try it out, but no choice for me here. So here i am in our forum asking questions in introductory post itself.

 

Am i making a mistake of going for M1000. Please suggest me in this regard.

Hello and welcome to this friendly corner of the universe from a fountain pen user in San Diego. There is such a wealth of information waiting for you to discover on this site. The M1000 is a great pen but too long to put in your shirt pocket and a bit large for every day carry. Do not be in a hurry to jump to a "top" pen. There are plenty of nice writing pens at all price points, read this site, learn how to tune and adjust your own nibs and get a feel for what you really enjoy-- have you explored a variety of nib sizes?

I am using my lamy safari with extra fine nib. I would like to try other nib sizes especially medium and italic.

The M1000 is a great pen, the M800 has the same quality, but a tad smaller, more to my taste.

:W2FPN: hi and welcome. I can share my experience here.

I own a lot of pens. Some are top benchmark pens.

last year I bought my first Pelikan based on an artist who is an expert on ink drawing and it was M200 and I am amazed by that pen. That pen has a steel nib and my interests were about my cursive and it is one of my favorite extra Fine writers. So that pen does more than other more expensive series pens like M400/M600/M800/or M1000 depending on what you want to do you can choose any pen.

They are all different in sizes and weight and choosing a specific nib that gives you more advantages.

I am planning to add more M but not an M1000. in the future. this is my honest experience.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
