L'etalon Repair - Need Your Help

Recommended Posts

Hello friends.

I am the original owner of this beautiful pen that I loved for many years. Alas, like all of my other modern Waterman pens (FP and BP), it eventually started to leak and fell apart. Anyway, I want to resume using this pen, and, as you can see, there seems to be a crack in the plastic of the feed that I need to somehow repair. I was thinking of using some kind of liquid epoxy, since it's a small gap I have to fill in. What do you think?

Next, and more importantly, securing the nib and feed back into the section, what should I use? I did read a couple of posts recently about the Carene and L'Etalon on FPN, and I recall suggestions to use epoxy for that. That seems a little permanent...if it starts to leak there is no removing it. My sense is that the original problem started (like with my Carene FPs) because inserting a cartridge puts pressure on the feed to push it out of the section. If that is true, it will take more than shellack or even silicone sealant to keep it in.

Many thanks,

Nick

This subject has been discussed recently.

A cartridge or converter does not touch the feed when installed. They contact and seal with an integral proboscis inside the grip. Pushing the feed out of a Carene would be impossible because they emit aft.

Thank you Force.

I read those posts and I'm not sure any they answer my questions directly - I think I follow Ernst, but am not sure.

So, the crack is in what Ernst calls the "holder" of the nib and feed. I will try to separate the nib and feed from the holder and probably use some epoxy to fill the gap.

Then, after reinstalling the nib and feed I am thinking of using a very small amount of silicone RTV to seal the holder into the section. I don't have the orange rubber ring anymore.

Hopefully this will do the trick, keep everything in place, and keep it from leaking.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
