Today was a big day for me as i entered the territory of fountain pens from the land of the rising sun. What a better way to start than 2 Namiki maki-e beauties.

 

Top one is a Namiki Yukari Maki-e Zodiac Horse 1st edition, by Masaru Hayashi 林胜

Bottom one is Namiki Nippon Art Maki-e Plum Blossom

I historically have bought pens for their functionality and quality and have not succumbed to the "Pens as Art" idea... but now find myself buying pens with more visual appeal and limited editions... I'm afraid I may be getting sucked into the abyss.

at a certain point there's no more quality to be had and then you have to start buying things that are quality and pretty.

The Pilot Namiki Yukari Maki-e Zodiac Monkey 1st edition, by Masaru Hayashi 林胜 added to the collection today. I will tone it down for a while.

 

One thing to note is that this one does not have Namiki but Pilot on the cap and nib.

Wow, you are getting a Namiki/Pilot pen every other day! Quick progress! The Monkey piece is my favourite among the 1st series of Namiki/Pilot zodiac! Excellent choice!

Sigh. Pens like that are way beyond my price point. And I just can't trust that the urushi has been fully cured. Which means that pens like that are also a non starter for me.

A lot of high end LE pens are ugly bling. And then there are pens like these which are drop dead gorgeous -- but my immune system is going "Nope nope nope -- urushi is just a fancy word for 'laced with poison ivy....' So nope...."

Totally jealous.

Thank you i really like it too although i prefer the horse. Only thing is the Monkey pen it has some dull parts like handle marks only they do not seem to go after wiping. Like the black paint has lost its shine and gone duller.

May I ask also, with completely no ill intention, what are your plans for these pens? To keep as collector's items, or to use every now and then, or something else? I'm trying to understand the rationale for getting pens whose aesthetic value so far outweighs their practical value

I am not quite sure about utilizing them as my writing instruments...well at least not until the full honeymoon period is over. My rationale for getting them is admiration for the artistic/aesthetic value for now.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
