Hey, y'all! My name is Ian, I am a relative newcomer to the fountain pen world, though already fairly obsessed (a feeling I'm sure you know all too well!) Been using fountain pens almost exclusively since getting my Pilot Metropolitan last march. Look forward to talking with and learning from you all. Cheers!

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN: What part of the Keystone state are you in? There's a pen club around here, Steel City Nibs, which generally meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Panera Bread in Bakery Square. I'm pretty sure there are clubs in Philly and Harrisburg as well.

A Metropolitian is a good starter pen. I like mine, although I may have to replace the converter in it (not sure if the ink I have in the pen at the moment is the problem, but it could be).

I generally suggest that you click on the "View New Content" button when you log in, in order to get a good overview of a range of topics. And to check the Pinned index to the Ink Reviews Forum.

But I also warn people that we are all shameless enablers, and will be more than happy to help you spend your discretionary funds on pens, ink, paper, repair tools, pen shows, sealing wax, ephemera.... I fell down the vintage pen rabbit hole, myself. (I initially thought I would only want a small number of pens, and stay in the under $25 US range for them.... :wallbash: I now have about 3 times my stash limit and say "Well I only paid X for that one" ("X" being a three figure sum in a few cases) -- whereas my first "good" pen was a $9 Parker Vector and I felt unbelievably extravagant at the time....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Thanks! I am in the lehigh valley, specifically Easton PA. I started with the Metro, before getting a sport and a safari as well. Since then my collection has grown to about to about 14 pens. My most interesting pen is easily the Krone Nailhead I recieved as a hand-me-down. Has a matte finish gold nib that is fairly soft and writes very wet. EDC right now is my yellow Prera inked with Kon Peki.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
