Frustrated

I have two Cross fountain pens (Flat Black finish) "Cross Classic Century Black Fountain Pen with Gold Plated Appointments and 23KT Gold Plated Fine Nib (AT0086-110FF)" each is new. One writes smoother than the other. The one that writes take any ink I put in it. The other pen sounds and feels rough and the ink does not flow well. When I do the loop thing it does not complete the loops. I scribble a lot in my attempt to maybe smooth out the nib. I do not want to press down hard on the nib in an attempt to separate the tins(sp) but get frustrated that it is not like the other pen. Any suggestions besides maybe ordering another nib?

Sorry to hear that you are frustrated with your new pen. There is nothing more frustrating that unpacking it's shiny goodness, inking it up and gah! it won't write. Did you flush it out before inking up? Sometimes new pens still have residual stuff inside that affects the ink flow. Also, try a different ink. Surprisingly, I have Parker pens that just don't like Parker Quink as well as say Waterman or Mont Blanc.

You also should not have to press any harder to get the ink to flow. If I am having flow issues try touching the tip to a paper towel. If you have good flow, the capillary action should give you a nice circle that spreads out. If you don't well, you're gonna have to work on it.

Hope that helps some!

Thank you for your response. I did not clean it, thoroughly, before using it. I will take that step now. I have used 3 different colors and brands of ink and they all feel scratchy compared to the smoothness of the other pen. I tried the Mont Bland and will get a Waterman ink (I love the pen I have) and see how that works. Thanks again for your response. Have a great day.

I did a thorough cleaning with "Goulet Pen Flush" and filled the pen with a Noodlers Blue/Black ink and it writes smoother.

Did you also try running a brass shim thru the tines to clear up any debris?

No I did not think about that. In addition I do not have any shims and just for one pen I am not interested in purchasing a pack or how ever they are packaged. Thanks for the idea as I will take it into consideration. I will work with this pen and see if it clears up any more. As I wrote it is smoother now than before.

Hello SeniorNovice. All of my pens are steel nibbed and I have used, with great success, the metal strips found inside anti-stealing sensors from electronic goods as nib floss(the stick-on rectangular ones; about 1 1/2"× 1/4"). Slice one open and you'll find two thin, spring steel strips that fits between tines, and portable enough. I've used mines in Lamy, Cross, Esterbrooks, Pilot, and Waterman nibs without harm. Can't vouch for gold or gold plated nibs as I think the strips are not as maleable. Flush and floss and see how it goes. Have you checked for tines alignment? Good luck.

I discovered this tip some time ago. Genius!

I'm glad that your pen is writing smoother!

Remember, Cross pens come with a lifetime guarantee. So, if the pen does not work - send it back to Cross and they'll repair it for the cost of postage.

Did you check that the tines were aligned and that they weren't victim to baby's bottom?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
