Barrel Defect Question, M800 Tortoiseshell (2013)

Hi everyone,

I just got this pen in the mail. It seems to be working well, and looks great for the most part, but the barrel has this defect, an area of discoloring or different degree of translucency I tried to show in the pics below. Are two layers of the barrel becoming separated? Can this be fixed and can it get worse? Any advice is welcome. Thank you!

I appreciate that this has become a very expensive pen. Just keep an eye on it and see if it changes in the next six years. It's the flaws that give people character and in dog years your pen is already middle aged!

If the pen was sold to you without disclosing the defect it would be unacceptable to me.

Because you know that it is there you will see it each and every time that you pick the pen up and it will grow bigger, in your mind if not in reality.

Waiting for it to get even worse is not the right answer.

If you knew of the defect and bought it anyway, it's yours now.

If you were not informed of the defect then I would talk to the Seller and request money back or a refund with a return.

A tortoise......Shawn Newton might be able to repair your rare 800.

Do see if the seller will come up with some money for the repair.

Thanks. Shawn cant repair this. By the way, I was impressed by what he can do in his shop, thanks for mentioning him. Will try to see what Pelikan says. Unlikely to have any success, given the age of the pen. But yeah the pen is still beautiful and it works.

True Shawn could replace the binde but not repair the situation you have. It looks like the binde is delaminating from the body. These can be very expensive, so I would talk to the seller about it.

It does look like a defect but there may not be much of a remedy given the age of the pen. I would certainly discuss it with the seller. Were you able to come up with a satisfactory solution? Since these are hard to come by, if you got a great price, it may still be worth hanging onto. I doubt this would significantly worsen over time.

Hi Sargetalon and Parkman, thank you for the advice. I communicated with the seller and we agreed on a satisfactory solution. I will update when completed. Thanks again.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
