So it started with an old Parker that my father had given me when I was in school, that I used a couple of times and then stashed away...

 

Two years ago, annoyed with having to deal with increasingly blotty, clotty ballpoints (not to mention all the corpses of plastic pens littering my wastebasket and table), I decided to dig out the old metal monster and put it to use again. At the end of the year I started hearing about these little Chinese pens that didn't cost much more than pocket change, but wrote like butter... you see where this is going... *koffkoffgateway pens*...

 

And then came all the bottles of ink...

 

And then, late last year I got my first gold nib pen... and then another... and then another... [shakes head] (What can I say... they're awesome for drawing, and make you want to keep writing forever).

 

Since I've been trawling this site extensively for months, and the wealth of information and reviews I've found here are largely responsible for the number of times my wallet has screamed for mercy, I figured I should at least register an account and say hello, even if my nerves might ditch me before I post much more. So hi to whoever's reading this! and I'm happy to be here, and to be learning from you all. :D

Yes, welcome to a rather nice section of the Internet. I don't know if there is a pen club near where you are, but if there is, that would be a good next step.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
