Hi everybody,

My name is Cris, 62 years young and have developed a taste for fountain pans in the last year.

Long story short. Was in a bad way about 4 years ago, basically losing my mind and memory. Initial diagnosis was Early Onset Dementia. After over 2 years of every test and a series of specialists a brilliant neuro specialist found my problem was a brain tumour. This had grown and had destroyed sections responsible for memory and motor functions. I was booked in for an operation to remove it, I was at that stage in a bad physical state. The Dr told my family not to expect too much, if I survived the Op I would be Hospitalised for at least 4 months and unable to walk. To be taken home, lfe expectancy around 1 year and in a nursing home within a couple of months. Well nobody told me. Thanks to the undiying support and love from my wife and family I never gave up. I have 3 sons, 23,19 and18. I walked out of there and I am 90 % of my former self. My grandfather had left me a Montblanc pen as a bequeth. I dug it up and restored it and so I discovered a passion for fountain pans, so here I am. Thanks to the Lord, he is my strength and I bathe in his light.

Welcome to FPN! God Bless and hope the hardest days are long gone and that you grow stronger every day. I am a Montblanc fanatic and caught the fountain pen bug only a few years ago although i have owned several for a long time.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I am expecting a joyful and interesting journey. The research I have done so far as been a revelation as to the history and development of well known and obscure brands. I will mostly concentrate on vintage Parker and Shaeffer, but I do already have a Waterman, an Onoto, a Burnham No 60 and of course my Grandfathers Montblanc.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
