A Bargain At Twice The Price!

I always wonder about these listings. Are they hopeful? Is it done to amuse someone, or to prove to a friend that listing prices can be anything you want and are not the same thing as a real price? Maybe it is part of a money laundering scheme to make income seem legal?

Ha ha! Ridiculous

And he cannot even be bothered to post a proper picture of the nib!

I was laughing recently when someone put up a SM100/59 (Italian Marble) starting bid £400. Of course since then it has been relisted several times at £100, still without takers.

So many people inamgine that because they own something it must be worth a packet.

I once saw a BSA C15 in an antiques shop off the Edgware Road at an extortionate price (£700), seems quite reasonable nay, cheap now.

I pointed out some of the non authentic parts on the bike to which the seller said 'whoever buys the bike won't be riding it!'

I dare say if anyone buys it at (or near) that price won't be concerned about the nib.

Don't think there's any money laundering behind this: it might just be that the seller will sell only to one buyer, with which has already reached an agreement. It could very well be that the seller, originally, was selling the set with two different insertions and that a collector, which may not show up any longer, suggested to put for sale the two items in a single one, to save on P&P and eBay fees for the seller, while at the same time preventing anyone else from buying it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, 9 days later, and it is still up - relisted actually. Same price. So, although sciumbasci had a great theory, it seems that he is actually trying to sell the pen at this price.

He also has it listed on Etsy, but at a discount. Only $50,000 if you buy on Etsy. Come to think of it, I believe it has been on Etsy for many months.

Also still up is the SM100/59 I mentioned. It began in February at £400, followed by a few weeks at £100. As I write, it is £75, still without a bid and a couple of hours to go!

Dang! It's back. I managed to stay away from it, last time.

It's such a steal, I may have to pull the trigger.

Apologies to other members who were (surely) after it.

No apologies needed, you go right ahead and purchase your grail pen lest it slips away.

A review would be highly appreciated.

OTOH, I could have stretched to 35K but the seller seems a tad bit greedy. tongue.png

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
