Starting To Collect Limited Editions

From the newer Writer’s editions, the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is an elegant and also very interesting pen. And last year’s Hommage to Homer is also beautiful and has a #9 nib, which looks great!

At least those may not be that difficult to find. But if you get a Proust or Hemingway for a good price, you should take it!

Stick with the LE, the normal range is dime a dozen. After all, its about making a statement.

IMO, buy quality rather than quantity.

There are probably less than 100 across W.E, P.O.A, D.P, G.C collections so just buy whatever catches your eye.

You can leave the 888 series out as they are precious metals.

Yeah, quick update,

I have a few on the way...

James Dean SE. (I do like the red better), getting changed to an EF

Miles Davis SE, barrel is damaged getting replaced,

1914, getting nib changed to a OBB

and hopefully Kinglarge will be able to help me with something truly special very soon..

after this, I think I have to go cold turkey and just enjoy my collection for a while before I start shopping again...

Another one on my bucket list would be peggy, but no hurry for that for now. Somehow, I think the S.E. actually looks better than the L.E.

Hi All!

A Big shout out to Kingslarge who helped me get something really special!

Just arrived in the mail, Prince Regent 888!

Obviously the budget stated in my initial post has been blown waaayyy out of the water, but this is something truly special!

Below are some of the pictures I tried to take of it, but its dark outside now... most important excuse, I suck at taking photos.

Although the pictures don't really do the pen enough justice, I think it is important to document the start of my descend into poverty via fountain pens..

More about the pen.

This is #616/888

I believe this is modeled after a 146 instead of a 149, so it is slightly smaller than expected.

But using a solid gold overlay, it still have a very glorious heft to it.

The nib seems slightly soft and springy, but I still have a ton of pens on rotation, so I am not inking it up yet.

I have to say, the workmanship for the overlay is very well done, and I can't keep my greasy paws off it, hence fingerprint marks all over it.

The gems are a great addition to the cap, giving it a fair bit of Gravitas, befitting of the character it protrays...

The only thing I think they could have done better, was not to use the usual black snow cap at the top of cap, but something custom for this pen.

All in all, I love it!

Same here, I like the Agatha Christie the most but I rarely use it. I can manage the pen by itself but the balance is a bit off when the cap is posted.

Depends on what styles you like. My top choices would be

  1. Agatha Christie
  2. Hemingway
  3. Proust
  4. Carlo Collodi
  5. Thomas Mann
  6. Mark Twain
  7. Schiller

You could even get lucky and pick up a few POAs for around this price (Steinway)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
