First Year Jotter Mystery

Mob Mentality

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I recently got a first year Parker Jotter in grey. I've noticed that this pen seems to only work with Parker branded refills. I have tried other refills such as the Schmidt Easy Flow and it seems when I click the pen it sort of gets stuck in the out position. This doesn't happen at all with Parker branded refills even after clicking the pen 20-30 times in a row. I was wondering if others has experienced this phenomenon. Also I was wondering which refills have worked well in first year jotters besides Parker Branded refills. ThanksFirst%20Year%20Jotter_01_zpsfqsuju9d.jpg

I have never tried a non Parker refill in any of my Parkers so have never come across this. However I do have a Schneider refill in a Schneider pen that I was presented with at Siemens in Germany when we were training our drivers on our new trains. I tried it in my first year Jotter and experienced exactly the same problem that Ralph experienced. On close inspection I notice that the Schneider refill is a fraction longer than the Parker one. I do not have a Schmidt refill to hand but I suspect it may be the same.

Interesting. I just took out my digital caliper and can indeed confirm that Schmidt refill is longer than the parker refill. 20190217_132942_zpsol4qplsc.jpghttp://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah48/Davide_Borrelli/20190217_132751_zpsmumuptrx.jpg

  • 1 month later...

I have just encountered the same problem that I was having with the first year jotters with later 50s jotter with the ridge ball clip. Just wanted to let everyone know. The same refill works fine in 1960 jotter seems strange.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
