Pelikan Focused

Knowing that the rules about what gets posted and what gets scrubbed here are strictly enforced, I will just say this up front: Next weekend I'll be looking at a bunch of Pelikan fountain pens (perhaps even making a purchase) at the LA Pen Show.

I've never been to a pen show befor so this will be a first for me and I am excited. I'm in the Pacific Northwest, so a break from this unseasonable stretch of snowy weather will be a welcome distraction.

Any advice is welcome.

That sounds like a lot of fun!

I went to my first pen show last year in DC and had a blast.

If at all possible get the weekend pass and go before it opens to the general public. You will have time to look at everything calmly and, most importantly, you will get to chat with the vendors - most of them are really nice and will chat with you, exchanging info or just having a nice time, forever. This was the best part of the show for me.

Oh, hand the CC, check book, etc., to your better half :lticaptd: , because you will be tempted! And it is very, very hard to resist!

Have a fantastic time there!

It's a fun show with a lot to look at and plenty of deals to be had. Cash is king, but some sellers will take cards/Paypal/etc. If you can get in Friday or Saturday you'll have the luxury of browsing with a smaller crowd, but it'll cost more to get in the door.

Look for Rick Propas. He is the final arbiter of all things Pelikan. I could not find if he were expected at LA. If he is there, drink in his fabulous Pelikans. If not, don’t get in a hurry, but Buy a Pelikan.

I love to look for and find used M800's at pen shows. Know your MSRP of anything you are looking for and try to get a super deal on a used one. New pen retailers will likely be there also.

Good to know about the value of green money vs virtual money, I was wondering about that.

Perry, thanks for the advice, I am going with a list and I have developed a good, better BUY IT! price list for the items I hope to find. Fortunately, the M800 form is not big on my list, M600's however ... I am vulnerable to compulsion there, Mrs. Dr. C may have to hold me back..

Since it is a Safari for us I have preregistered and bought the whole 'trader' package so will be able to gain early entry. As mentioned earlier this will be a first for me and very likely a last as well so I figure might as well go for the total emersion experience.

I am well acquainted w/Mr Propas, have bought a number of pens from him over the years, in fact I just received one from him in the mail this morning. Probably not enough time to get a pic up before we leave, but will attend to that next week.

Along with my Pelikan 'problem', there are a couple of particular Parkers I am on the hunt for, hope I can fill those empty slots in the pen box.

And, being able to spend a few hours gazing into actual sunlight (looks like it may be sunny on Saturday), dining out with my wife, not having to wade through slushy snow; all these side benefits will be greatly appreciated. I am old enough not to get too excited, but ..........I am looking forward to the experience.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
