Large Ink Bottles

My biggest ink bottle to date was a 250ml one, which I had to decant into smaller bottles.

But I received my happy mail yesterday, with this beauty:

A 1L bottle (1000ml) of emerald green goodness.

Gimborn, a Dutch company that's been out of business for quite some time, had been bought by Pelikan at some point, so I'm expecting this ink to be very similar or the same as the old 4001 emerald green (now replaced by dark green)

I can spend years writing and not made a dent in this stash 😂 I've ordered a

TWSBI Diamond 580 AL in Emerald Green, which I hope will be a good match with the ink.

What is your largest ink bottle? Or the largest quantity you have of 1 specific ink? I'd love to see some pictures 😁

Biggest ink bottle I know of -- and don't have -- is a Pelikan One-Liter job.

fpn_1549837767__tinte-4001-1-liter-koenb

It's only to be had for their 4001 Königsblau (Royal Blue) and 4001 Brilliant Black. It used to be available in a much less ugly glass bottle, but... those days are now long gone. :bawl:

I strongly suspect you're only supposed to use it to refill your glass bottles. The rest of the time, you leave it in the chemical closet of your house.

I found a one quart bottle of Royal Blue Quink in an antique store last year. It has faded, unfortunately, to a lackluster washed out gray.

I understand larger bottles are out there, gallon or larger.

A gallon.. Whoa! I saw in a Goulet video that Nathan from Noodler's actually does make his ink in those sizes if requested.

I'd love to see such a huge bottle in real life! 😂

Or bigger? I can see someone converting a water cooler to a 'dispense your own ink' machine for their store.

Now I have a vivid picture in my head of the most marvelous ink store ever.. Tap your own inks from various dispensers 😂 It would be the equivalent of a candy store for us ink lovers 😂

I used to have an 8 oz dispenser bottle of vintage Quink Permanent Violet, which had a rubber stopper and a wick into the bottle. I didn't have the nozzle, though. I also had a 3/4 full bottle of vintage Skrip Peacock Blue (and now I know why people wax nostalgic about the color....

But I ended up decanting both into smaller (2 & 4 oz.) Boston rounds, to make it easier to actually use the ink, and gave the empty bottles away to a guy in my local pen club (I had no useful way to store the big bottles).

I'll admit that if the price was right (mostly it hasn't been -- those things are wicked expensive) I'd buy one of the big cobalt or purple "cathedral" bottles that Carter's Ink used to use. I don't normally collect bottles, but those are pretty and I could use them as vases.

I have a number of vintage old bottles of ink. I may decant, putting them into nicer new bottles with a seal I'm more confident in. Other times, I'll pour a little into a miser and fill. My biggest issue is the labels. I'd love it if there was a reference somewhere where we could recreate the original labels for other bottles. If one exists, I haven't found it. I like some of those original labels.

The bottle in my avatar is 12oz,from the mid-late 30s I think, and I also have a 32oz bottle of Carters from the early 1940s.

The ink, in both cases, has separated and isnt really all that usable, sadly.

So, a color mixer such as they used in Rocky Horror? "More Blue s**t"

"Hmm, This is almost green enough. Just a little more dark blue, the more yellow.."

Someone posted this photo from a Boston Pen Show many years ago. There was another photo from another pen show but I lost that one.

I wonder if he'll still do that.

More like a refill station or bar taps 😂. Go there with your own empty bottles or get sone there. Ooh let's fill this one with yamadori from that dispenser, and that one with that green ink over there..

I like Heart of Darkness. But not so much that I'd want a gallon of it....

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I recently saw a picture on facebook that had exactly that - in a stationary store (forget where) there were numerous spouts where you could refill an ink bottle. They might have even been mixable, but I doubt it. Very fun idea though. It was called an "ink bar". Maybe they were Pilot inks.... I wish I could find the picture!

And whoa, that is a lot of Noodlers!

Pretty sure that was the J Herbin ink bar.

You could get only the one colour you want per bottle, no mixing.

They're available, but Pelikan controls who they sell them to. Pelikan ink is a favorite of tattoo shops, and it really isn't intended for that use. If they suspect that it is going to such a shop, they won't sell it.

Since I use so much ink testing pens, I keep about 6 of them on the shelf. Its the only ink I use. Likely more ink in reserve than I'll ever use, but I save a couple hundred dollars refilling vs. 50 ml bottles for the same volume of ink.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
