Overseas Duty & Custom Charges

Does anyone know how to calculate the import & duty taxes for buying a fountain pen from outside EU to UK? I see you bargains on eBay but unsure how much I'll get stuffed on taxes. The gov.uk site is a nonsensical nightmare to work out, just a ball park figure will do :)

Over £15 - VAT and handling charge which varies. Often £8-12.

Also depends upon who's on duty and where it's coming from. US always. Japan sometimes. China rarely. YMMV. Some merchants put the full value some don't.

So it short - it depends!

Be prepared to pay the full tab and you won't be surprised.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Theres a decent import VAT estimator here: https://www.shippo.co.uk/faqs/what-duties-and-taxes-will-i-have-to-pay/#import_vat

Always remember youll be charged the £8 handling fee by Royal Mail on top of the VAT & customs duty. (Ive never had to pay customs duty, my purchases have always been below that threshold, but I remember for a $25 t-shirt the VAT was only a couple of quid but the £8 handling fee felt somewhat punitive!

Basically you will be charged duty on the total (including p&p) declared on the customs slip if it is over £15 (unless declared as a gift, in which case it £39) - think it's 4% for stationary and pens, and then you are charged VAT on the new total. Looking at the government site (to confirm starting levels) it looks like gifts don't get charged duty if under £135, then 2.5% if the value is between £135.01 and £630, after which it is normal rates.

There is also a handling charge. UPS, FeDeX, Parcel Force, plus others charge £12 and every parcel is processed so you will have to pay. Royal Mail charge £8 and still seem to just select random parcels so some times you're not charged at all.

Note if you are bringing items back yourself, rather than having posted, then the base level is £230 (if you're stopped - I hung around in the Declare are at Heathrow, though due to bringing a realistic airsoft gun back with me from Hong Kong, and was totally ignored.)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
