How Many Pens Do You Have?

Eeek! 37 including the couple on the way.

In fairness, more than half of those are super cheap ones that I use for ink testing and situations where I wouldn't risk a nice one. A handful of those are cracked or duds but haven't quite made it to the pen pot in the sky yet.

Will be sticking to a few, good quality ones now I've figured out what I do and don't like.

23 fountain pens and a few dip pens.

Ruth, how do you like the brush pens? Do you use them for painting or calligraphy?

I actually use them with highlighter inks. They work great for that purpose. They came free with bottles of Noodler's Kung Te Cheng; although I'm afraid that one of the inks (Noodler's Dragon Catfish Pink) may have SITB -- or at least the pen does, and I haven't been quite brave enough to open it up.... I'm thinking that distilled water and a good dollop of bleach will be called for, and to soak the pen and tip for a while.

That's better than buying a bunch of really expensive pens and then discovering that you don't like them or that they don't work for you....

I have fifty pens not counting the Vintage pens I don't use. Twenty four of the pens are currently inked which is a little much to go though in a rotation. I should clean a few out.

Three fewer.

...I think it comes from stage two of a fountain pen collector/user's life...

Hi Mike,

Hhhhmmmmm... ...how many more stages do I have to get through? :D

More than I need, but not as many as I would like to own. I also have one Rohrer & Klingner glass dip pen.

Around 15-20. I actually feel like I have a pen for every purpose now, so there's no need for more pens... Having said that, I'd still like to own (or rather, try) some specific pen models.

Even with fairly accurate records of some aspects of my fountain pen 'collection' in a spreadsheet (or, actually, a workbook with multiple spreadsheet 'tabs'), I lost count. Let's just say I have 113 pens of my personal 'fleet' inked at the moment, and 135 if I include my fiancée's pens in the count. I just received another eleven new pens in the post yesterday, four of which I'm in the middle of flushing and cleaning ahead of inking them tonight.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

currently 11 and one on the way so 12 i guess, and actually i doesn't feel like i need more, first 10 was enough to understand my preferences to make better decisions in the future, ofc i still would love to try some currently and future released pens and maybe collect specific brand or vintage pens, but i guess maximum i will ever end with will be around 30 pens.

This is the best answer anyone could give! So true. Lol

I'll give you the same answer I give when this question invariably come up...

More than I need, not quite enough.

Hello, TheRealMikeDr.

Would you mind if I asked you how you were getting on with your Cross Peerless? I read your review way back when you bought one of the first. is it still a favourite? It is on the shortlist for my birthday pen. (It's between the Peerless or a Platinum Izumo) at the moment. If you have the time, I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

Hi Sandy!

I've still got it and I actually got an Izumo last Summer at the DC Show. Between the two I would choose the Izumo simply for the Urushi finish but that's a matter of preference. They're both excellent pens. The Sailor nib and the Platinum nib are pretty similar with regards to writing qualities.

Neither pens are "value" pens - I would probably look for a used/discounted Peerless but I would certainly get it again.

And another variant: Somewhere between "too many" and "not enough"....

Nine, and I’m thinking of whittling it down to four. I don’t like to think of them not being written with every day, and I tend only to use my favourite four (one for marking up docs in red, the the other three with blue ink in a bit of a rotation thing). I imagine I’ll miss the other five when they’re gone, though...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
