Hello Folks,

Can anyone here offer any help on this Wahl Eversharp pencil? I've never seen one with a white star inset like this. I've done a fair bit of searching online, but I've come up empty handed.

Thanks in advance!

I believe it's an Eversharp Aluminum "white star" pencil made roughly around 1940. A description of this can be seen in Jonathan A. Veley's "The Catalog of American Mechanical Pencils " on page 70, right-hand column. Unfortunately, his web site is not available anymore. According to his book "the 'white star' denoted an Eversharp guarantee of quality."

Many thanks to RoyalBear and FrozenPen! I had searched the Leadhead page but didn't see that article.

The one in the "Weird Stuff" photo is quite similar to mine. But I believe mine is celluloid (or even hard rubber?) rather than anodized aluminum; it is not chased; and the white star is enamel and set in a gold disc, much like the more typical gold seal, rather than aluminum set directly into the barrel; and it has two gold-filled bands, one wider than the other, above the clip.

So, further variations on the weird stuff!

I'd like to see the matching pen!

Thanks again

I just looked at my pencil collection and found that I have one like yours except my two bands are the same size and the color is brown. I took the mechanism out of the pencil and looked at the housing. It looks and feels like aluminum.

Is it chased like the one on the Leadhead page?

The differences with my pencil: It is not chased, the tip says Thin Lead, on the back behind the clip it says "Genuine EVERSHARP Patented U S AMERICA", the star on mine is a gold medallion (no white star), and I was incorrect about the bands - they are two different widths (the small one above the large one).

The pencil in the link also has Thin Lead on the tip, as does mine. However, I'm not quite sure what you mean by "the star on mine is a gold medallion (no white star)". Is there a disc/medallion with an impressed star shape that is not filled with white enamel? If so, I suspect it has simply worn away. I'll recheck the barrel material on mine.

Following are photos of the pencil. I doubt the star was white and worn away. Other areas would also have to show wearing.

I later ran an update to the article about these pencils:

They are celluloid, and they have been documented. Looks like the star medallion might have been a transition from a double-check seal to the white star of 1940.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
