Hello From Sunny Southern California

Hello everyone!

My name is Erik and I'm a pen addict. I'm also a father of 4, with a wife and career, who enjoys sports such as soccer, golf, bowling, baseball, and football. Moreso, though, I love fountain pens!

My family and I reside in Lakewood, CA. I'm just starting out in fountain pens but so far, I've purchased the pens I feel I'll enjoy both visually and writing with. I've probably gone overboard for being so new, but I enjoy it!

Here's a short list of my pens:

Laban Ocean

Monteverde Mountains of the World - Everest

Pilot Metropolitan

LAMY Safari

FC Loom

Monteverde Invincia bronze

I look forward to learning all that I can and participating as much as I can. The wife and I have 2 month old twin girls at home (2 of the 4 kids), so a lot of time is spent with them. Thank you for accepting me and I hope you all have an amazing morning/noon/night.

Cheers,

Erik Veach

Hello Erik and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I know exactly what you mean! Probably the worst time to move there, but it's still better than the wild situation where I am now.

Greetings from [currently frigid] Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

Looks as if you're off to a good start with your pens (I LOVE my Metropolitan).

I generally recommend that new people click on the "View New Content" button at the top of the page to get a good overview of a range of topics (you can adjust how much/often you get new stuff in the sidebar on the main page). Don't do what I did when I started -- which was to read the Parker Forum. All of it. Back seven years ago it was 175 PAGES of threads (it's bigger now). Also, have a look at the Pinned Index to the Ink Reviews Forum.

But you should know that we are all evil enablers here, and will gladly help you spend your discretionary funds on pens, inks, paper, repair tools, books, ephemera, sealing wax, and pen shows.... (My own personal rabbit hole was vintage pens...).

So, what ink(s) are you currently using?

Well, that may be true. Not sure of your situation, though. Where in CA are you going to move to? SoCal is extremely overpriced.

Ruth,

Thank you very much for the advice! I don't miss the East Coast (2 years spent in NJ) during the winter, that's for sure!

I have a variety of inks, oddly enough, but here's what I have in pens for the moment:

Monteverde Charoite (purple)

Iroshizuku Take-sumi (black)

Monteverde Horizon Blue

Monteverde Bleu

Waterman Blue

Diamine Lilac Night

Of course I have a few ("few" of course) bottles of other inks sitting around the desk area. The Monteverde Charoite is such a wonderful color! If you haven't tried, I highly suggest it.

I look forward to being a part of the "enabler" group, as I tend to enable myself often. :/

Cheers,

Erik

Unfortunately, one of the most overpriced areas....Orange County. However, it's my hometown so lots of family and friends there to help get settled in.

I'm currently in rural China which is getting more precarious by the day as policies here are quickly shifting.

What is your preferred nib width so far?

Welcome to FPN! I am also from sunny SoCal-- if there is one thing we have, it's nice weather! Except for tomorrow and the next few days.

What got you into fountain pens?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
