Just picked up a desk set that isn't like any I've seen. (though some of you probably have).

it's a double 444 (which I believe is a 447) but it's the kind with the drop-in wells. I've seen a few of these, but not many. I've seen wood and onyx/marble. I've not seen one like this, though. It's a hard surface, and is meant to look kind of leather-like?

It looks totally of the period. It has the steel tabs on the bottom to hold the disks in, and the same kind of cork as I've seen on others.

It came with red and clear fountain pens. The last owner may well have used it as a fountain pen desk set rather than with the original Dipless pens.

Anyway, thought I'd share it and see if anyone has seen one before.

Very cool!  Do you think if was an aftermarket item or made by Esterbrook?

Looks exactly like the Esterbrook ones I've seen before, just a different material. I'm 100% sure it's factory original.

And as those of us who hang out 'round these parts already know, the variety of Esterbrook's production is never ending.

It is a handsome piece. I may just use it the same way the last owner did, as a desk set for the fountain pens. The tops don't want to come off easily and I don't feel like soaking them at the moment.

And one of the pens has a 9128 nib on it I'm anxious to try.

Anxious to see how the 9128 performs.

Double 444 are 484. 447 usually relate to plastic body and/or certain English made sets. This is a 484. I have seen these in a multitude of leather colors, including one with a calendar feature. Always one of my favorites.

Thanks, Brian. Wow. Multiple leather colors, and a calendar. Sheesh. It never ends, does it?

Yes, I have that set...it has a bit of ink staining on it, but is otherwise in good shape. No calendar. A nice set! Haven't thought about it for some years, maybe I'll put it up on the site for sale.
