Hi everyone,

I have been lurking for about six months, since I started to get re-interested in fountain pens (having used them as a child but given them up as a student 20 years ago). I live in Switzerland but am British.

I'm just writing this to thank all of the FPN members and moderators/administrators for giving their time and expertise so generously. The information and viewpoints on FPN have been really helpful as I have started my collection, which began with a Waterman Hemisphere in the summer of 2018. Since then, and in a relatively short time, I have already had a Lamy phase (Al-Star and Safari, Studios and then a fantastic 2000), A Waterman Carene phase (3 so far!), and have also given in to temptation and got hold of a beautiful Pilot VP Namiki Raden Galaxy. I think I might need to sell a kidney soon!

I am also interested in learning more about vintage pens, and recently bought a Conway Stewart 475, which I am not loving. I am currently keen to try out the Pelikan oeuvre, but my bank balance might have other ideas!

My favourite pen of all is my engraved Parker 51, which belonged to my great-grandfather and which my Dad got serviced and gifted to me at Christmas. If I wasn't so paranoid about losing it, it would definitely be part of my edc! As it is, it lives safely on my desk and every time I use it, it feels significant, somehow.

Anyway - thanks again everybody! The internet is pretty great sometimes, isn't it? :)

There isn't much wrong with a 475 that can't be easily fixed

Hi - welcome to FPN from London  -  sorry to hear you aren't impressed with the C.S., perhaps the nib needs some tlc on the tip to improve the quality of the writing.

Thanks for making me feel welcome everyone!

PaulS and peterg - good to know, I'm sure you're right - got it from Andy's Pens, who has a good reputation, so I'll get in touch with him and see what he says. It's the ink flow- I have to press really quite hard to get it to write. I'm wondering if its:

a) just me not being used to vintage pens (having so many modern gushers!), or

b.) a nib/feed issue, or

c) an ink issue - tried it first with what was to hand (Quink blue-black) and now with 4001 Brilliant Black, which I read is quite a dry ink...?

It was described as a 'stubby medium', and I was attracted by the line variation...

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!
