I don't know if I can give you a top 5, but in my experience Kanwrite is probably the best Indian nib maker. Ranga uses them on their eyedropper pens and everyone of them has been very smooth and wet without any adjustment. they also make a pretty good flex nib. Most of the other Indian nibs I have used, such as Wality/Airmail or Camlin, tended to be mediocre at best and usually needed a good bit of tinkering before optimum use.

Following is my list. Your list may vary.

Brahmam and Leader handmade nibs made by the late Shri Janardana of Vijayawada. Superb craftsmanship and finish. Vintage and hard to find.

Ratnamson hand made gold nibs. One of the last people still habdmaking gold nibs. I have several nibs from them and I am a fan of their craft.

Pilot India gold and steel nibs. Very well made mass produced item. Some can still be found NOS. unmatched if you like EF or F nibs.

Mhatre gold 14ct nibs. Used on vintage platos, dorics, and several other brands under their custom branding.

Ambitious. They make 14ct gold nibs as well as steel nibs. I have used their nibs extensively and so have several other Indian and foreign pen makers. Their gold nibs are v good too. I have used only 5-6 of their gold nibs.

Their email address is invalid and the landline number given there is not working. Any other way to contact them?

They are a member on FPN and I could find a post by them with their contact info. Hope it helps. I was able to successfully buy plenty of nibs for my needs directly from them, but it is best you attempt a direct contact.

Hari Sir...

I recently started using Fountain pens. Presently I have some Hero pens (because of nostalgia) , Pilot metropolitan, Platinum preppy, and Indian ebonite pens. The best value I got from Indian ebonite pens, which inlcude Ratnammsons Model 21, Sultan pens, JK pen.

The nibs I like the most are Pilot and Ambitious. I also have kanwrite nibs but I like Ambitious Nibs more. Unfortunately I missed the group buy of Ambitious nibs, as I am new to this FPN.

Vijay are you from Hyd? Sultan and Jk have done very nice pens. Do you have a Deccan pen?

Yes sir... I am from Hyderabad. I have visited Deccan Pen store last week, but their pens are out of stock. They said they will make them available shortly. So I went to JK pen stores, and bought a ebonite pen with Ambitious nib. This pen does not have a name, but writes really good.

Sir,which is your favourite Deccan pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
