When we think of German-made pens, it is usually Pelikan, Montblanc, and Lamy which come to mind. Germany's Diplomat has been in business 97 years. My recent treasure: Diplomat Aero Blue fountain pen, medium point--a very enjoyable writer. This instrument has a finely chiseled and polished stainless steel nib, as well as aluminum casing, matte chrome fittings, anodized surfaces, groove-like depressions on the barrel and cap, and finally, an exclusive closing system>soft sliding click. (When this style/model was originally released, the "play" in cap-to-barrel was excessive. Diplomat fixed that issue perfectly). There are a number of reputable USA Dealers for Diplomat pens, including the admired, penchalet.com

I have the same blue model I got from Goulet pens and while I like the pen I find the section too slippery. It's strange since the texture on the section should solve that, but some people like me still have an issue.

Strangely amazon in the US usually has one model of the Excellence A2 at reasonable prices, i.e. $60 - $70 + shipping, but the colour and nib might not be what you're looking for. Not the Aero but sounds like a good pen, thought I'd pass it along.

I have an early run brown Aero - the version which (reputedly) had issues with cap security, though mine is still OK. I *love* the look and feel of the pen, but feel that I can only use it seasonally: in winter the section feels a little slippery to me too. I *think* it may be more perception than reality - but it's such a lovely pen in every other way that I can't bear to part with it.

Great looking pen . But isn't it too heavy for daily writing

Hi....I have not found it to be too heavy, but I have not used it enough to say for sure. It does look like it is made of heavy material, and it's certainly heavier than other materials used in pen making/manufacturing, but still, not too heavy/uncomfortable.

Understood. Speaking of slippery grip sections, I have some metal section pens that I will not use, and others not slippery whatsoever....

+1. Lovely pen, original design, top-notch quality from top to bottom. Slips though my fingers as if covered in hot wax.

I have not had that experience. Assuming the pens are identical in terms of the grip section surface, then....?

Right now using my new Aero (in Orange). A great little pen - it's growing on me. I like the solid "click" when I close the cap and it's a real trooper - always writes right away. No problems with the grip.

I initially purchased an Excellence 'A' a number of years ago - really liked that pen too and have been slowing warming to other models.

Loving my black Aero. Thanks for the review!

Edit: Just noticed that Pen Chalet is selling these for a significant discount right now. Limited colours and nibs though.

Hope that kind of post is ok on this site; I have no connection to Pen Chalet.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
