The Genius Of Joe Grasty

Recommended Posts

I wanted to just write how happy I am that we are in an age of fountain pen collecting and appreciation at an unprecedented time. Having amazing people like Joe Grasty around to make this happen is just nothing short of amazing.

I bought this Conid about 1/2 a year ago, and somehow it's nib and pen just did not get along together. The nib would be so wet it would just overload the paper. When I saw that Joe had these new housings that allowed Japanese nibs to be fitted on pens like the Conid, I jumped right on the band wagon. The swap was an easy 5 minutes and the results astounding.

I only recently have gotten into Japanese pens because for the longest times the bodies were just so oh hum. But with Joe's hard work and genius, I now can have my cake and eat it too. Amazing nib performance on a pretty well designed and unique body.

Thank for sharing. There are many creative people working now. It seems like we are entering a second golden age on innovation, or at least a gold colored age. :D

Does this mean your MB calligraphy nib is now up for grabs? I call first in line. :P

Wait, what?

Could he make a Pilot #10 housing for my Nakaya Piccolo, do you think? Cos the Pilot #10 nib is too small, or the Nakaya nib collar/section is too large, and it's my dream to have my favorite Pilot nib housed in my all-time favorite pen model.

(Alternative is one day to meet Pablo of fpnibs at a pen show and pay him to modify a Nakaya nib. As far as I know, he's the only one who grinds a PO nib, but I really, really, really want my Pilot #10 PO nib in the Nakaya Piccolo.)

Wow, I did not know that people kept track of my pens since I am not a regular contributor. The pen is currently not being used right now. While I really love the pen, I find it too precious to be used daily and my substitutes are $10 Parallels.

Sorry guys. I thought he was quite famous among us. Here is it:

As for ethernautrix's question, he DOES make custom parts. Ask him whether he could help you fit a pilot into a Nakaya?

MANY, MANY, MANY THANKS!

Woo-hoo!

(I sense hope.)

I keep track of bespoke MB nibs, especially when you provided such fine photos. 😁

I just wish that a no-nib option for a basic bulkfiller wasn't over 300 euro.

If I'm dropping that kind of cash, I'm probably going to get the kingsize with the #8 18k EF.

Maybe my tax return... I have several 3776 nibs I'd love in a bulkfiller body (being able to switch a bulkfiller between a SF and a BB would be really fun

I also could get a collar for my ebonite feed and FA nib in the 823, or a 21k M sailor nib.

I love Joe's work. Dude is a genius. the ebonite feed on my 823 is nothing short of perfect. the fit is absolutely factory.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

Agreed. Joe is a genius and such a great resource to our community. Yeah I do agree that the bulkfillers are priced beyond the reach of many. At least the Minimalistica brings it down to a more acceptable price.

He does have a collar for a 14 or 21k Sailor nib. Although if it is a newer nib the feed is slightly different and he has to redesign the collar to accept the new feed.

Aha... thanks for that. I ordered a Sailor/ Bock collar and it does not fit. I was wondering why...

It's only for a nib from the KOP line, fit into a #8 JoWo housing, intended to go into the king size bulkfiller. the standard and large models of the 1911 nib don't have housings made (yet)

He did. i have one, but the newer 21k nibs in the #6 size have an extra ring at the end and didn't fit the collar. It'll be back when the collar fits the new feeds.

I, too, purchased an ebonite feed for my Pilot 743 after many months of trying different inks and contemplating selling the wretched thing, for the feed never could keep up with my demands (big 15 FA nib): result? Immediate gratification and satisfaction! The pen really works as it should have, in the first place -- plenty flex, plenty ink!

Thank you, Joe! (And, by the way: he is a good communicator, too)

PS: The tiny seal that lives at the top end of the feed is not necessary when re-installing the feed into the section. No leakage without it.

By the way, for Ethernautrix' sake: I think you had better read again his website, for I recollect reading that -- for the time being -- he is no longer accepting one-off custom work...so, good luck on that one.

Presently, I myself am awaiting his announcement of the release of his feed for Pelikan M1000. Any day now...?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
