Is It Odd That I Want Another 149?

Maybe not an answer to the question, but an indication that you are not alone in your desire:

What a group!

Thank you for posting such a terrific photo.

Is it your “Lucky Thirteen”?

The labels on all pens except the last one look helpful.

Hats off to your 149s!

The labels are very helpful in keeping track of whether I have serviced them (also where purchased). I first tried tracking them with a spreadsheet, but after three or four, that became impossible!

I have to sheepishly admit that I have more than this "Lucky Thirteen" but not too many more.

The nibs are all 14Cs and 18Cs and range from EF to O3B and most are an absolute joy to use.

There's more?

Great!

The thought of 149s aplenty appeals to me.

Those labels are especially interesting to me.

One of my 149s is a Bespoke EEF. It's ideal for writing comments on labels for field samples used in my work with students.

Until seeing your 149 group image, I'd never considered placing such labels on pens.

Thank you for the additional information.

Two of the pens have EF nibs that are like an architect grind, though I think they came from the factory that way. The vertical strokes are as narrow as any nib I have, while the horizontal ones are slightly wider. One reason I have so many 149s is that even nibs with the same width vary so much in their writing qualities, though not better or worse.

Ok, so I have a 149 with an OBBB nib, and I adore it. Its a phenomenal writer. But seeing a 149 with a BB nib got me wanting another. Its in beautiful shape, and Im so very tempted. Is that odd to want another?

By no means. These pens have the ability to multiply. Especially that ones with broad nibs. :)

Thank you for the lucid explanation.

The 149s do vary in their writing qualities, just as you've written.

There's no “one size fits all” approach to nib crafting in the 149 nibs I've used.

You're in a better position to assess that, given your collection.

I like the Muji drawers with the inserts from gopens.

It'll be odd and we would question your sanity if you didn't

At the height of my obsession I had one from virtually every era and nib size.

  • 2 weeks later...

You're in the MB forum. For many of us it is odd you only have one 149.

The pen is a great form factor and B+ nib widths have enjoyable line variations in writing.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
