Its pretty affordable btw... Quite a lot available for a steal in Tao Bao..

Thanks for the tip. I just blew the new year 红包 from my in-laws on a 70s Platinum pocket pen with 14k medium nib. Cost me a third of what a new Pilot Elite goes for when on sale.

I just blew the new year 红包 from my in-laws

But it isn't Lunar New Year 2019 yet!

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

One of the benefits of a an East-meets-West marriage is getting two new years, two sort-of Thanksgivings, and two birthdays hahaha.

Looks great! Someday I need to grab one of these or the Pilot of Platinum equivalents from the 60/70s. They seem like perfect pocket EDC pens.

Next time you come to the US, PM me. I have several I got cheap in good shape that I'd gladly part with in trade for some PenBBS ink.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

Truthphil: you and I are really close! we should look at trading stuff! I have a few pens I want to offload too...

Sounds like fun, although I don't know if you'd want anything I have. If you are in HK, there also seems to be problems trying to ship to the mainland. I once bought a pen from someone in HK and it was turned back at the border...so weird.

This will be a bit boring for a lot of ya'll, but I'm waiting for a Cross Century ii ballpoint. Possibly two of them if I win a second ebay auction.

I've carried three fountain pens with me for the last several years at work, but I'll be damned if I can get an excuse to use them much aside from making lists these days. I take meeting notes with a fountain pen if I'm planning to keep those notes to myself, but more often I'm taking notes to share and it's much faster, neater and more convenient to type them on my laptop. So really all I get to do is make lists. I sold most of my inks because I rarely get to fill a pen more than once a month now.

I used to write on my own time at home, but I'm either taking care of my daughter, doing household chores or taking work home. So.. these days a maintenance free ready to write pen kind of appeals to me.

Being a Cross fan from my pre-fountain pen days I know they've got some solid ballpoint offerings.

Since the redesign to the inner cap of the Diplomat Aero, my interest in them was renewed... with the recent sale at Goulet, I couldn't help myself. Should be in my mailbox today, can't wait to see how it handles.

"Why me?"
"That is a very Earthling question to ask, Mr. Pilgrim. Why you? Why us for that matter? Why anything? Because this moment simply is. Have you ever seen bugs trapped in amber?"
"Yes."

My first pen of the new year arrived today.....a lovely Platinum pocket pen from the 70s in superb condition. The nib says it's a medium, but writes like a Western EF. Still very smooth and decent flow. Not too shabby for $30 shipped!!

And... my NOS Parker 45 Custom M in burgundy just reached the provincial capital, so it should be here before the week is over. :bunny01:

Pelikan 400 Tortoise.jpg

I'm waiting for my Pelikan 400 Tortoise with EF nib ordered last week. I saw it at the Long Island Pen show about 3 years ago, and was very impressed with the color, It unfortunately would have busted my budget for the show, so I walked away. Now it is a Birthday gift (gift certificate plus small supplement from my own funds. I anxiously await, keeping an eye on the door as I am expecting it any minute.

I have airfare booked for Japan in February. Might look for another Nakaya to replace the one I sold. Would like a Montblanc 146 too...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
