First 45

I think it's fair to say that I have a bit of a thing for 45's - think twice about pulling the trigger on the Harlequin or you might get addicted! :)

Nice haul you have there. I've never seen some of those colors; I have black, the Burgundy/red, dark blue with matching cap (does that make it an Arrow model?) and -- most recently -- grey. Nothing remotely exotic, sadly.

There are still a few missing that I know of … so the obsession will continue for now!

When you look at the style, it conveys the beautiful and upbeat sense of its time. Maybe it speaks so to me because I was there.

Haha too late! I thought a mint circlet harlequin for £37 was too good an opportunity to miss...

Great price for a circlet harlequin.

Congrats on your P45's and welcome to FPN.

Well, I like your handwriting. It's very clear. And thanks to you, I'm thinking of a 45 in a color I would've never considered.

It's your own writing style, legible and attractive.

Big up the olive 45 massive. My first 45 too, pride of my wee collection. I say first - I look at others on auction, but in my eyes they can't compare. Spikey Mike's collection has changed that attitude, I think. (You big tease)

I wasn't, but I get what you mean. Something abut the lines of the 45 that seems very elegant and pleasing to me.

I love the 45's and think they make a great collectors pen with so many different varities to look for ... original silver tops, all plastic "Arrows", gold top deluxes, then the choice of original stainless or gold plated trim … At one of each with just the normal colours and models that has to be around 100 different pens before you even get into the Flighters, Lady Pens, Coronets, TX's and Harlequins. Not too expensive (until you get into the super rarities!) and easy to fix as well as being one of the iconic pens of the time.

And also the fact that a 45 Flighter was my first ever pen may have something to do with it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
