And, why not? I'll give this one a try too, but I'm still wildly addicted to variety, so it's not going to be my favorite, per se, but inks that stand out this year for some reason:

  1. Akkerman #09 Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indigo - this is my daily carry and a fabulous blue-black ink
  2. Diamine Salamander - my latest favorite murky green - love it!
  3. Waterman Audacious Red - I've been using it for markup in my EF Pilot Decimo, and it's really bright and well-behaved
  4. Colorverse Ham #65 - recently purchased and really like its color, shading, and flow
  5. Robert Oster Aussie Brown - because it turns out I like brown inks and it's my current favorite

Lots of other inks could have been in there - there are 27 other colors I've inked at least once this year! :D

Some that have become regulars this year....... (versus favorites)

Edelstein Olivine (this was a surprise)

Edelstein Aventurine

KWZI El Dorado

KWZI Pine Green

Levenger Pomegranate

Of course, as always Pelikan 4001 Blue Black has remained a staple.

In 2018 I think I only got Hisoku and Aonibi, which I really like.

Tried several nice inks this year but am most impressed with the three Stipulas - Dark Blue, Fading Grey and Light Blue; honorable mentions to Monteverde Sapphire and Take-sumi.

Most used ink still Kana-cho, pretty much my EDC.

eta: Inked a JIF with the L'amant that arrived earlier this week. I can already see it needs a wetter pen but wanted to check the color - lovely, indeed.

Bought in 2018:

  • Sailor Kobe Suma Purple, which I had long thought would be a favorite, but which I delayed buying because of the cost. It was certainly worth the wait! I have never bought a backup bottle of any ink but might make an exception for this one.
  • Waterman Tender Purple, which I bought as a bluer replacement for Pelikan 4001 Violet. I plan to use the Waterman ink in vintage pens with sacs from now on.
  • Kuretake bokuteki sumi ink, which I use mainly with a brush, but which is also suitable for dip pens and has a nice matte finish.

Bought in 2017 but not used until about a week ago:

  • J Herbin Amethyste de l'Oural. I am liking it better as it evaporates and darkens in my Kaweco Sport but will henceforth try to use it in wetter pens. I tried the Kaweco first, because I hesitated to put an ink with shimmer particles in a more expensive pen, but there is really very little shimmer, so probably I could use this ink in any modern pen.

Received as a gift:

  • De Atramentis Brilliant Violet with Copper. This ink flows luxuriantly, with a markedly lubricated feel, in the Kaweco Sport and has a great deal of shimmer, so I probably won't be using it in other pens.

Amongst those I've tried for the first time in 2018, my top 5:

fpn_1545561547__bce6a94d-a17b-43dd-8f71-

1. Sailor Yodaki, doppelgänger of my grail ink Akane.

2. 3Oysters Doldam, a very special grey that shifts between yellow, blue and grey, but there seems to be batch inconsistency which is a shame.

3. J. Herbin Rouge Grenat, a very saturated and rich red ink that is (happily) so not in the undersaturated watery style of J. Herbin.

4. Rohrer & Klingner Aubergine, new release from R&K is always welcome. Too bad it's an LE.

5. De Atramentis Document White. I know as a white ink it's pretty much useless, and it stains, but I've had a lot of fun playing with it.

Cynical Lgsoltek time:

And it's only fair to list also my bottom 5, those I've really hated:

fpn_1545561550__0b123565-ea60-4ffe-b6e2-

1. De Atramentis Document Red. That's not red. That's ugliness. Is there an ink uglier than this? (Yes there is, see #2.)

2. J. Herbin Rouille d'Ancre. Yes I've never tried it before until now. Stuff of nightmare.

3. De Atramentis Document Fog Grey. Not a fan of the colour though I don't hate it that much. But the behaviour! That feathering! That bleeding! Ugh.

4. Noodler's (Osprey) The Azure Main. Who says Noodler's makes quality ink? That kind of feathering and bleeding, you call it quality?

5. Sailor Yozakura. Sailor makes its version of Tundra Green. Cherry blossoms on snow? More like trampled cherry blossoms on dirt.

Did you see the pH tests from earlier this year? They suggest that Waterman inks are not nearly as safe as one would be led to believe by hearsay.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
    • A Smug Dill
Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
