Observations On Montblanc Orange Leather

HalloweenHJB

Recommended Posts

A special Santa in a neighboring state (thank you!!) has sent me a special orange gift:

Montblanc's Elixir Parfumeur, Leather scent, Orange Brown

.

It's a somewhat nice color, but the ink has some issues.

  • The scent is strong —which someone might like or dislike—
  • the color is light, and dries down rather dull, and
  • the ink seems a bit watery (the swab is considerably lighter than what a pen shows). That may be why it also appears to have some feathering issues on different papers.

Here's a look (photo taken in direct sunlight):

What is that gorgeous beauty of a pen in the picture?

It an inexpensive Levenger True Writer, Orange Marble, I believe. Bought it many years ago, and it's a good, reliable writer. Naturally, I like to pair it with orange inks.

EXACTLY. It's unreasonably expensive, and not a well-performing ink. Not sure what the Montblanc people were thinking with this one.

On the other hand, Jacques Herbin now has a collection of four "encres parfumées" as well, at one third of the price of Montblanc's. I sniffed them a few days ago and they're not bad. The black has a very nice smell of inky smoky woods and vetiver. If it weren't BLACK I would have bought one.

Don't like that at all. I did pick up the new James Dean ink a couple of days ago. It's a bit....orange!

That's why I ordered it. Haven't had a chance to try yet.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

It does match my orange leather journal holder though. Not my favorite color, but it does grow on you.

I tried the other $85 USD of disappointment... the Elixir Purple one.... nothing special, and it clogged my pen... LOL... Well, not really clog, but I am not used to my inks not flowing, or having hard starts every few seconds... I didn't get the bottle, I took a converter full from my friend's bottle. What a POS.... lovely bottle though. Wish I could buy the bottle only.

Yes, it has a somewhat orange base to it. But the overall effect is a hot red, don't you think?

Sort of, yes. It dries more red. Reminds me very much of Diamine Blood Orange but just a smidge lighter.

Actually, the Poupre Elixir is not $85.00 but $71.50; you have to pay their "upcharge" for the scented Elixirs.

And I wish the Leather Scented Orange (Demon) Elixir had enough substance TO clog a pen, instead of being so washed out!

I think the nicest thing I can say about it is the packaging, nice bottle & BOX,

"it is a really attractive BOX & bottle."

Many thanks for the review. I was very curious how those inks look since I have not ordered them yet.

Looks very interesting since I like "off-color" inks :-)

Cheers

So, where is the rest of the dye? Thank you for sharing this with us!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

~ It's good to know that despite being watery, the scent is indeed strong.

The writing sample is helpful, showing how this ink performs.

Thank you for posting this.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
