Discount Notebook In "the Rookie"

Conan the Grammarian

Recommended Posts

I was watching Nathan Fillion's new show, The Rookie, recently and on his sergeant's desk was a discbound notebook of undetremined branding. I've noticed more people using disc bounds now that since Office Depot/Max and Staples have started carrying them. Just thought it was an interesting sighting.

Hmm. I'll have to look for that (I think we're a couple of episodes behind).

I really loathe autocorrect. I just noticed it changed the title from "Discbound Notebook in 'The Rookie'" to "Discount Notebook in 'the Rookie'"

Now, I have to find a way to edit my thread title. Arrrgh!

Yes, I have noticed over years of posting that once you put something in a title of a post you can not edit it ( Mr Grammer man notice also I do not use contractions because there is some software gremlin operating in the FPN which now does not allow the typing of contractions into posts, at least not from iPads which I have used on the FPN for more than 5 years).

What is a discbound notebook?

As for contractions? The iPad is probably sending out a "smart quote" (or typographic apostrophe) whereas the forum wants basic ASCII ' (single tick) " (double tick), not left/right curved marks.

Thanks for the insight Baron. I’m not sure I know how to choose the single tick mark but at least you’ve explained the problem. Thanks again.

Discbound notebooks use a small plastic disc to bind the pages - kind of like the rings in a three-ring binder. A "mushroom" is punched in the page to be inserted - using a dedicated punch. The small discs are less bulky than the rings in a three-ring binder. Office Depot/Max makes one in their Tul lineup. Staples makes one under the Arc marquee. And Levenger.com calls theirs Circa.

ETA: Levenger products, including Circa, can be found on Amazon.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
