1200 Usd Budget

Hi!

I saw this post in the Montblanc forum and I just had to ask here too (thanks for the idea @ShahYaakov!)

If you we're given 1200 USD to spend on a Pelikan purchase, what would it be?

That is an easy one for me: Pelikan M900 Toledo with fine nib. Better, I already have it.

That is after converting the A$ paid to US$ at current exchange rate. At the time, it might have been a little over US$1200. If the criterion is currently advertised RRP in US$ then I will have to think a bit more.

Well,

six vintage pens(or more).

A 100 or 100N in F or EF, a 140 OB, four 400 EF, ST and OB and OBB.

Modern alternative, or if money is still left:

A M805 Demonstrator with S nib (special order nib, I would wish a medium italic)

Best

I wouldn't spend $1,200 on any pen, but if there was no other alternative... Probably track down the m405, m605 and m805 dunkelblau trio, try a vintage 140 or Ibis... There would probably still be a lot of money left though. I do like the Toledo but no, it's too much... Maybe organize a give away, there must be someone somewhere who's always longed for a Pelikan they couldn't afford, or wouldn't pay in principle.

'30's full tortoise 101 or 101n....and a Toledo...oh, the 600 Grand Place. That aught to do $1,200,

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

I agree with Strangebird-910Toledo will be correct addition considering the budget. And I will add 100/100N lizard.

Hope I will get both..one day.. soon.

Several vintage Pelikans! I know I am shooting myself on the foot on this one but... you could get four to five post WWII 100N or 400 or 400N (if you are lucky) or 400NN for that money! Great pens with great nibs! I know I will buy each and every one (of course depending on shape and nib size) I come across for a reasonable price.

My favourite Pelikan is unfortunately too expensive (LE White Tiger). So I'd go for a Toledo either or a couple of M800s (Ocean Swirl, Vibrant Blue, Renaissance Brown.)

I would love to find an M415, M420, or an M818 all of which I could likely fit in that budget.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
