Help Identifying A Mint Blanc Pen

Hi everyone, brand new member of the club here! Please forgive my ignorance if this pen is a common one, Im afraid I have very little prior knowledge of pens.

I was clearing out my grandfathers house and came across a Mont Blanc pen he was binning along with a load of other bits from drawers (it was a lucky spot!!) which he said he didnt want and I could have. It has 3x boxes of gold colour cartridges with black ink inside.

He doesnt remember where it came from or know anything about its history, any help working out what age it is or anything else would be greatly appreciated. We think he got hold of it sometime during the 1970s. Thank you in advance.

Hello and welcome to this friendly corner of the universe from a fountain pen user in San Diego. There is such a wealth of information waiting for you to discover on this site. I am not a MB expert but I doubt that it is a fake, however you'll get some knowledgeable advice soon.

Welcome aboard, I hope you enjoy your stay.

You may find lots of information about Montblanc pens in the Montblanc Forum.

I have a ballpoint and pencil version similar to your pen. I too have much to learn about the pens of the 70's.

Welcome!

I'm no MB expert but afaik that shape is rarely faked. In the 1970s MB was just transitioning from pen maker to the luxury goods Maison it is today; their pens were higher-class but not necessarily uber expensive.

As jar said, it is a SlimLine. The one I own writes very smoothly. If you get along with slim pens, as I do, this can become a lovable companion.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

I think its a Montblanc Noblese. Late '70's/early 80's.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Thank you all very much, appreciate it! I think either SlimLine or Noblese sound like good calls - they look very similar in pictures. Interesting to know that they were transitioning in the 1970s too. Does that mean that the quality of their pens increased after this one was made, or just the price point? I have tried to upload another pic but the server really isnt keen on mobile use to upload multiple at once!!

What an amazing community for discussion and advice, thank you all so much for your warm welcome.

Until Montblanc was bough by the Richemont group it was a full line pen manufacturer with pens from the student level to the very high luxury level. Many would say that if anything, quality today is somewhat less than it was 50 years ago.

I'm pretty sure your pen is a Slimline. The Noblese and Noblese Oblige were other variations on the slim cylindrical theme. The first such Montblanc was actually made for Montblanc by Aurora and was based on the Aurora Hastil and IIRC called the VIP. Montblanc also added student level versions of the slim cylinder called the Carrera and Caressa.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
