Brand New To The Hobby

Recommended Posts

I just bought my first fountain pen 2 weeks ago. It is an incredible looking hand turned pen kit that a coworker made for me. I was intrigued by the idea of an heirloom that I could pass on. After a week straight of using it, I was totally hooked. I am now waiting on my Pilot Metropolitan that just shipped this morning. And I already have my eyes on at least a half dozen other pens I can't wait to get my hands on. I am totally hooked.

I look forward to meeting and interacting with all of you.

At this time, I have two teenage kids living at home and am on a limited budget. Not to mention my wife doesn't fully get the obsession and is a little hesitant to come on board, probably because my fly tying budget is already big. But she also fishes so that venture was a little easier to convince.

I am looking at a Lamy safari, or other entry level pens. I am very infatuated with the Parker 51, seems rather obvious with all I've read about it's popularity, but the space age, sci-fi look to it is something that speaks to me. I am also interested in Esterbrook pens because of the price point for a vintage.

Welcome to FPN and the Hobby. Esterbrooks are great affordable vintage writers. They are a great entry level vintage pen and you get a lot of great nib options. I love the Parker 51, it's a very nice looking vintage pen and is a smooth fine. If you like the Parker 51 but are on a budget you might consider a Wing Sung 601, it is a Parker 51 Clone with a pretty good out of the box F-EF nib those run about 12-15 dollars shipped. Just some thoughts to get you going. :)

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
