Oh Look, Another One

I really dont like opening lines.

Alright, thatll do the trick. So, hello!

Whilst Ive wrote with fountain pens for much of my life, Ive only recently come to truly appreciate them and begun amassing my own collection. It was after I lost the Parker 51 which Id been using for a while, a few years, that I realised how much I loved using using a fountain pen. I dont own many pens at the moment, an old 51 Aerometric Mk. II, a Sheaffer Legacy II which I write with daily, a pristine Pan Am 51 which I very foolishly filled with ink and now need to clean, and a Newhaven prototype 51 made entirely of aluminium which is due to arrive next week. Ive been investigating this last and very curious pen.

Id like to learn how to better care for my pens, I also enjoy simply reading about them and its an excuse for another collection; I like collecting things! Namely Scotch whisky, old Nikon lenses, Pan Am memorabilia, rare CDs, sunglasses, and coats which may or may not have been worn by television detectives in the seventies and eighties.

Its a pleasure to be here.

Kind regards,

K. J. P.

Thank you all for a very warm welcome!

Thats a tricky question from the one whos definitely not a wizard. I think it would be contested between Glenglassaugh and Balvenie, although Glenmorangie is my usual tipple. I can make an interesting recommendation though, during my last trip to Scotland, following the dinner there was a whisky tasting session with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, I took home little bottle of cask No. 37.92 and I must say its absolutely lovely.

Uhh, I can absolutely recommend almost all the SMWS bottlings. Most of them are just superb! I've got propably near to 20 myself. I hope you enjoyed the tasting. I've found it to be very informative and full of nice people (and very good whiskies of course) when I took part in one last year.

I think I've still got to try a Glenglassaugh - looking forward to it then.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
