Alternative To Montblanc Irish Green

I really like the color and shading of Montblanc Irish Green. I also like its performance on poorer quality paper (from what I've seen in reviews). The one drawback is the $23 price tag which, as a high schooler, I am a bit hesitant to shell out. I was wondering if there are any similar inks out there with very minimal bleedthrough. Permanence or water resistance is preferable but not a must-have. I use a Jinhao with a fine nib if that is of any help.

Here is a writing sample from The Pen Habit, if you don't know what it looks like.

MB has exponentially stepped up its ink game over the past decade, many thanks for the competition that put the feet to the fire.

Pelikan brilliant green, has been enjoyed (along with MB Irish Green), toss in the slightest whisper of black to take the shine off it.

I bought a bottle of Diamine Sherwood in a quest similar to yours. I've read that they're very similar in appearance. Though it's a beautiful green with generous red sheen, Sherwood isn't the best, performance wise. It tends to feather and bleed on lower-quality paper. I haven't yet tried diluting it, which people have recommended for other inks to reduce feathering and such.

I like Pelikan 4001 green. Dry.

When Pelikan brought out the new 4001 Dark Green in February 2016 they told me that their 4001 Brilliant Green would be discontinued. Now I don't know if that is/was true, but if you really need and want the 4001 Brilliant Green, get it now!

I forgot to add.... Pelikan's 4001 Dark Green isn't all that dark a green. Check out out my review and those of vis and Chrissy. There, you can also see a few comparative inks from other manufacturers.

For $23 you get 60 ml of ink in the classic "shoe bottle", which will refill the typical 0.75 ml capacity converter 80 times. That's a lot of writing.

And if funds are limited, I'd definitely recommend samples instead of bottles so you can try out an ink and make sure you actually like it. Just because everyone else likes/recommends and ink, doesn't mean you're going to like it in your pen on your paper. Not trying to knock what other people like, just that when it comes to pens and ink our individual preferences are the most important and unique.

waterman harmonious green is a great, reasonable price. As Monteverde emerald green.

My experience with MB Irish Green matches what you describe. It’s a very user friendly ink. It’s free flowing, no clog-ups or feathering. Irish Green along with MB Lavender purple are my favorite easy to get along with MB inks.

I can’t think of an alternative, but getting some sample viles from someplace like Anderson Pens, or Goulet’s would be a good start. Meanwhile maybe you could put a bottle of Irish Green on your Christmas list. It’s worth waiting for.

Listen to the Badgers — green from Waterman or Monteverde will be first-class and reasonable.

Amongst the Monteverde greens, Yosemite Green looks like the closest match to the writing sample in the first post.

Samples are your friend. The samples aren't overly expensive and you can really try out an ink - see if it flows well in your pen. AND you won't get bored.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Same characteristics as MB Irish Green?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
