OK, boys and girls, guess if you can:

My in-law who is far and away from where I now live found this fountain pen in an old box. He is not very good with technology, but still managed to take some pictures of the pen. Only when he comes visit in December I will be able to look at the thing in person (the pen, not my in-law). Do any of you vintage lovers see any mark that could get me closer to finding out the identity of this pen? I will post more images of it in about 30 days when he visits.

I am no authority by any stretch of anyone's imagination, but hazarding a guess. It may be a Pelikan, based upon the '500' on the barrel.

Not a Pelikan, three cap bands, the 500 was not on the pen, in the 500 had a rolled gold piston cap where it would have been. The 500n and 500nn, I don't know where marked but would not be just there and would have been tortoise I would almost bet. It was a flagship pen.

Need to see the clip...............could be a Soennecken 500....school pen??? But I didn't find 500 listed in Labrou's book.

Ask your father in law what it says on the nib.

This weekend I will talk to him and will ask him to take more pictures, with special attention to the nib imprint, pen cap, clip, bands and barrel.

I think in the pics you can kind of see dry ink around the nib and feed. I don't know how many decades that has been stored. More than 40 years perhaps?

On the other hand, he found it right beside a grey Parker 51 (16k gold filled cap with a blue diamond clip). That one seems fully functional after all these years.

The diamond made me think of Conway Stewart, but I don't think they did rounded ends like the one on this mystery 🤔

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
