I'm Tammy, currently living on the California coast (though I'm moving to Arizona sometime next year). I'm a senior manager at a software company presently, but in the past I've worked in a lot of facets of IT/computer engineering, as well as as a photojournalist and paralegal. I've loved fountain pens for a long time, though I'm just now learning about all the exciting products and community that exist for fountain pen users now.

 

The current collection of pens on my desk includes: Pilot Metropolitan, Lamy Al-Star, TWSBI 580, and a couple of Levenger True Writer pens I got years ago. I've got my eye on a few others (I'm lusting after a Lamy 2000 at the moment). I prefer piston-fill pens, though I desperately need to broaden my ink collection. I'm building a wishlist on Goulet Pens that would make my wallet cry to satisfy, but I'll chip away at it a bit at a time. :-) I write a lot for work, but I also looooove my fountain pens for writing letters and thank you notes. (I try to follow a rule a friend of mine gave me years ago: "If the amount of effort someone goes to on your behalf is more than the effort it would take you to write a thank you note, you should write the note.")

 

It's nice to be here and to find others who share my fondness/love/obsession for fountain pens.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
