Greatings From Australia!

Hi everyone!

I'm writing in to thank the admins for approving my application to join your community. I'm quite new to this wold of pens. I've always held an interest in fine writing equipment, however was never in a financial position to start using or collecting the finer pieces. I now have 2 pens with a 3rd on the way. My very small, entry level collection stands at a:

  • Waterman Maestro black with gold trim finish
  • A completely unknown make and model with a matte aluminium finish on steel body (much like a traditional Parker look), stainless trims with a partially gold plated, iridium nib. This pen is a curious one to me as it is lovely to write with, does not leak, is exceptionally well made but it has no branding on it at all, came in a very cheap and nasty plastic box - but it also came with a matching ball point clicker. I'm very unsure about this pen as it all points to a cheap, knock off type but is still a lovely pen to look at and use
  • On the way from the UK is a Waterman Preface with matching mechanical pencil in a red marble finish

I look forward to reading your comments on this world and learning more about these pens from you all. I hope you are all patient with what will be many seemingly basic and silly questions as I come up to speed with everyone else's knowledge. I also hope to expand my collection in the future and acquire some more high end pieces.

Thank you

jPod

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome from Perth.

Great Tidings from :P Melbourne

Hi jPod, welcome aboard. Always nice to see someone else from Australia.

cheers . .

Awesome! I'm in Geelong myself. The support for fine pens seems quite lacking here, you have to go to Melbourne for some good pens. Heading to the Melbourne Pen Show Sunday though, so hopefully that should be good!

Sadly, both my sons and my wife ended up unwell and I wasn't able to make the trek to the city to visit the pen show. Did any of my fellow Australians make it? Do you know when the next Melbourne one is? I believe the next one is Sydney.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
