Mb 136 Broken By Customs

See pic. Thats what it looked like before I packed it in cardboard, then tissue, then PVC pipe. When Brad Torelli opened the package he saw a pen with a broken off barrel and no piston filler DRP knob. I guess US customs opened it, tried to turn the knob, broke it, and sent it to him then. There were no pieces in the package either, as per Brad. What a day. Luckily, its just a pen!

Maybe it's just a pen to you, but to customs, it was probably a challenge.

personally, I've never had a problem with pens going through customs, and hopefully never will. Sorry this happened to you.

Thanks guys. It was going to be my first 136. I waited more than a year looking for a good opportunity, everything aligned, and then I bought it. There were many risks taken along the way, but this was not one I had accounted for. It was a sad start to the day, but having bought and sold about 200 pens over the past two years and never having had a problem I guess this freak incident was simply the law of probability doing its job ;)

How frustrating and unfortunate. At least Brad can make something usable out of it if not original.

Tragic! Sorry to see that.

Regardless of the customs officers' level of skill or knowledge, they should at least include an explanation of how the item has arrived in the condition it is in - ie. broken.

Even if there is no outcome, you should file a complaint, on principle.

(Include your before and after photographs.)

Yes, just a pen, but still an annoying event!

Here's to better luck in the future!

Why?

...I've sent and received several hundred pens that way....and still do.

Over the past few weeks an individual in the US was mailing pipe bombs inside manilla envelopes to notable American Democrats. The manilla envelopes and their contents physcially match the envelope and the PVC pipe the OP had mailed his pen in.

The individual was captured by the FBI, but at least one other envelope appeared after his capture (having been mailed before he was caught).

I'm not saying this is why the OP's package was opened, I'm just explaining the PVC comment made by CarlosQ.

Absolutely correct. I hope this incident does not signal the beginning of a new policy directed at opening envelopes and packages with PVC pipes. But then again I would not be surprised.

Which brings me to ask if anyone can post a source for the clear plastic screw-together pen tubes that some of the sellers on eBay use? We might all go that route if customs/P.O. rules and practice change...

Those transparent cases look nice!

In this instance though, I dont think it would have helped because even if they opened the package it would have been OK. But they decided to turn the piston forcefully and thats what broke it.

But yes, maybe avoiding pipes is a good idea

They should absolutely be held accountable for that!

That's an example of gross incompetence and it shouldn't be tolerated!

They are called "Evidence Tubes". Come in a variety of sizes. I switched to them several years ago after having a few shipments "Opened for inspection" and none would have been going through Customs.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
