Hello From Ohio!

Hello from Ohio!

I'm a student currently studying at university for Chemistry and Philosophy. I found myself writing a ton, and eventually go bored of all of my writing looking the same. I've always been at least half-conscious of keeping my writing looking nice and neat, but it wasn't until recently that I found myself not only keeping my writing clean, but also varied and stylized.

I started experimenting with various pens and colors and such, and discovered fountain pens naturally through this. My first ever was a TWSBI Eco, and I fell in love with them immediately!

I actually found this website before I had ever written with a fountain pen, and I'm happy to finally be a member of it.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome, and if you are in Central Ohio occasionally, please consider coming to a Pen Club meeting. The schedule is on a minor social media site.

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN: You just missed the Ohio Pen Show in Columbus, this past weekend. I think there was a meeting of the Central Ohio Pen Club there at the show.

I usually suggest that new people click the "View New Content" button at the top of the page when they log in, to get a good overview of a range of topics (on the main page listing the various sub-fora you can go to the sidebar on the left to control how often you get new stuff shown to you). And to check out the pinned Index to the Ink Reviews Forum.

But you should also know that we are all shameless enablers who will happily help you spend your discretionary funds on pens, inks, paper, repair tools, sealing wax, ephemera... and of course pen shows, where you can geek out with fellow pen people, shop, take workshops, etc.

ETA: There is also a pen club in Pittsburgh, Steel City Nibs (which might be closer for you if you're in Steubenville). We generally meet at the Panera Bread in Bakery Square (across the parking lot from the Pittsburgh Google office). The next meeting is the Wednesday after Thanksgiving (it got pushed back a week because of the holiday).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
