Shaeffer Triumph Nib Unit - Misaligned/bent Nib

Inky.Fingers

Recommended Posts

This nib came as a loaner from @AmberleaDavis. Thank you for this opportunity to un-twingle a nib.

I had this opportunity and was afraid to do it for the longest time. I have experimented with my own nibs first before attempting this.

Nib lost during experimentation - none. Take your time and do it right.

For those who enjoys the process... here are some pictures.

I put down my FP when I have these around. They are wonderful writers!

Doesn't look like much huh? A bit of misaligned? How to get to the nib on an inlaid?

One short one long? What? No it is an oblique, and yes it is one long one short.

See it now? Use a loupe or be eaten by a wolf.

A little of warm air all around and loosen the sealer.

I use a hammer and post-it packs, just like the YouTube video...you know the one!

This pen is a very sweet writer. Wet, wet, too wet for me. Uses too much ink, I like it dry fast. But, it is what the lady wants, not what I want. Always!

I hope that these picture help someone who is brave to do it. Not all inlaid nibs are un-mendable.

So....now I need a donor ... of a similar Shaeffer inlaid nib that you can sacrifice for me to remove the inlaid nib, retip,

and put back into the nib section or creating a new nib section.

Come on!! I know you have one and just sitting there in your drawer.... give it to me!! Let it live again!!

Congratulations on straightening the nib.

Don't bother trying to get a nib out to retip and put back in. The nib is attached at each corner by a tab firmly embedded in the plastic. Trying to remove the nib invariably breaks the plastic, or the nib, or both. Sheaffer didn't even try, but would scrap the entire nib unit and recycle the gold if there was a flaw.

I don't know about John Mottishaw, but Greg Minuskin does not retip the nibs. Not for technical reasons (which i assume means that he can isolate the heat) but because they usually aren't worth doing.

WOW you are amazing!! I had no clue that it was misaligned. I just assumed it was some funky ink I was using. So there you have it, reasons to at least occasionally use non-fussy ink.

@InkyFingers once again, you are my hero.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
